Problem in backspacing and deleting in MS Word

For the past week or so, I have been unable to properly delete letters (characters) in microsoft word 2003.

There are three methods to delete/replace stuff:
1. Put the cursor before the character and hit the delete button
2. Highlight the characters to be deleted and hit backspace
3. Highlight the characters and start typing to delete those highlighted characters and delete them

Recently, I have been unable to perform #2 and #3. However, these functions still work in other programs such as mozilla firefox (in the web address area for example).

Anybody know what is going on?

THANKS

I've never had this problem, but have you tried going into Tools --> Options and then the Edit tab? The first item in that tab is "Typing replaces selection". Make sure that is checked. If that doesn't do it, then look at the other items in there.

It worked, thanks a lot!

I wonder how I randomly unchecked it.

THANKS
