I just got a new 40 Gig Maxtor D740X hard drive and installed it as my slave. I got that MaxBlast program and booted off the disc. The problem was that when it came to the menu that has the options for formatting etc it said that the max size of each partition had to be something like 2.4 gigs and so it wanted to make like 19 partitions and it wouldn't let me choose anythign else. Why is this?

Don't use MaxBlast. Partition and format it with whatever operating system you are running.

I would do this accept it does NOT show up in Explorer in Windows 2000. I'm assuming it doesn't show up because it's not formatted?

Right-Click My Computer, click Manage and choose "Disk Management" from the Storage selection. Assuming the drive is jumpered properly and your BIOS detects it, it should be there. Right click on the drive and you should be able to partition and format from there.

Ok thanks that looks like it will work. The only problem is that I am formatting this drive on my dad's computer which already has a HD setup with Win2k. If I partition this drive etc and assign a driver letter.. say 'F' to the partition... will I be able to use this as my master for my own computer in a couple of weeks without changing anything? See what I want to do right now is format it into two partitions.. a 3 gig and a 37 gig.. and leave the 3 gig empty so that I can install Win2k on it in a couple of weeks when I get the rest of my parts and I want to transfer some stuff from this computer onto the 37gig part. Will this work?

Edit: and what Allocation unit size do I use to format?

Ok I partitioned one part into 3 gigs and formatted it fine and then tried to format the second partition and it finished saying that the volume size was too big or something and when I click on the drive in explorer it says it's not formatted. Why would it have given me an error like this?
