PROBLEM: File and printer sharing not working between 2 computers

I have a PC and a Mobile device, both running WIN98se.
I know both have 10baseT ethernet functionality because they can both access the internet through my cable modem. I have been playing around trying to get the "File and Printer Sharing" functionality of Windows networking to allow me to copy some files to the Mobile device from my PC.

Here is what I have done so far:

given both computers the same domain name with different computer names
checked the boxes in file and printer sharing to share files and printers
plugged in the proper crossover cable to the ethernet ports

Am I missing anything? Still no worky

Have u set the ip address on the PC and Mobile device??

you have to set the ip address as 192.168.0.1 for the PC
and set 192.168.0.2 on your Mobile device !!!

yeah, easy, you will want to kick yourself for this one. 🙂 instead of using the of the shelf ethernet wiring at best buys you have to buy twisted pair wiring (aka crossover wiring).

this is because you don't have a hub in between computers.

after that, what you have to do is
make shares on one or both computers (with shares you can view files and folders via networkneighborhood). and internet share is another thing. could I suggest the wireless nics? I want to get those for my desktop/laptop computer so I can go anywhere and use the internet and my network.

but anyways.. what you have to do is setup the computer that is connected to the cable modem to be able to share internet access. in windows ME it is very easy all you have to do is go to the dialup folder and there is a guide program that will help you through setting it up.

windows98/95 i am not sure about because they wouldn't be good network servers, so I never tried 🙁 but I am still sure that someone on this board has

ps. what ken was saying if you are trying to setup your network by hand which would take a longer time and not be as user friendly. with my suggestions, the computer will setup a dhcp server (gives other computer's ip numbers when they boot up). This is a lot nicer if you want to hook computers up later.

yeah, i put in a cross over cable too. but still i couldnt share files between my laptop running win2k and my desktop running win98se. do i have to manually set the ip? thats sounds so anal, shouldnt that be automatic? i use both pc's to connect to the internet every day, so having to do the ip manually and rebooting is gonna be a pain in the neck ...

It seems that you forgot a crucial step (unless you did it but didn't say so in your first post).

Once you set the network properties to share files and printers you then must set the drive(s) (or directories [map them as drives]) and/or printer(s) as shared devices.

It is very easy. Double-click "My Computer" on your desktop. Then single-click the drive you want to share. Click on "File" on the top toolbar. Go down to "Sharing" and click it. The next box is self explanitory--you will see that the button "Not shared" is selected. Selected "Share as" and then put in a name, e.g., C DRIVE, and grant the rights such as full or read-only.

For the printer, go to the Control Panel or the Printer tab at Start->Settings->Printers. Again, single-click the printer you want to share. Click on "File" on the top toolbar. Go down to "Sharing" and click it. The next box is self explanitory--you will see that the button "Not shared" is selected. Selected "Share as" and then put in a name, e.g., HPLJ2100, and that's it.
