Problem enabling direct3d acceleration

When starting UT2k4 I get the following message:

Please enable direct3d acceleration. You can do this by starting dxdiag and enabling direct3d acceleration in the display 1/2 tab after installing directx 8.1b (or later) and the latest display drivers for your graphics card.

I have directx 9.0b and the latest catalyst drivers, yet when I do the above, direct3d is greyed out.

Do you have anything (such as Netmeeting) installed/running?
Some programs can interfere with D3D acceleration.

Check all the little programs you have running in the background.
