Problem copying files from old XP HDD to Vista

Hi,

I've just build a new system and I'm trying to copy some files from my old drive to my new one, but some files in my "Documents and Settings\user\Application Data" subfolder cannot seem to be copied/opened even after I've modified the security settings to take over ownership of the files/folders.

Does anyone know how I can copy those files over?

TIA.

Thanks. The KB article is for XP. I'm in Vista, and some of the options seem to be different.

For example, I don't see any "simple file sharing" in Vista, but I did see a "sharing wizard" which I guess is the same, and I've disabled it.

Then, in the "How to take ownership of a file" section, both administrator accounts(default "Administrator" and my user account which also has admin rights) are already in the ownership dialog. There is no "Add" button under "Advanced Security Settings", and under "Effective Permissions" tab, all the effective permissions are dark grayed out and unselectable.

Help?

When you changed Ownership, did you remember to check the "Replace Owner on subcontainers and objects" checkbox?

OK here's what I'm trying to do
I right click on a folder and choose "Properties"
I click on "Security" tab
I click on my user account under "Group or user names"
I see that not all permissions are granted, so I click "Edit"
I click on my user account under "Group or user names"
I select "Full control"

Then when I try to apply, an error message pops up:

"Error applying security
An error occurred while applying security information to:
...path...
Access is denied"

Can't figure this thing out...

File sharing in Vista is a PITA!

I figured out how to do it, after a while, but it still sucks, IMHO... you gotta re-auth on every NEW session... it's part of the New World Order security features in Vista. Either that, or 'trick the system' by using the same PW & Username on all your machines. Hello?!?!?!

Personally (and this always pisses ppl off when I mention it - so let the flaming begin), I simply run an FTP server on whichever machine I want to transfer files to/from, and use a FTP client (or MSIE) on the other machines, to do the dirty deed!

My current favorite FTP server software is Cerberus FTP Server - it's *free* for personal use - works great - and I can install it on a machine and have it up and running in less than 5 minutes!

Win-win! ;)

I figured it out! After much googling I found out 2 cmd line commands that gave me access to the files. One is takedown, the other I can't remember(starts with I). :)

I had this issue within the same OS (XP). I was goofing around with permissions and somehow locked myself out of my partition.

Took me a while but I found an option somewhere that granted me access by doing something... I think it was under "Owner" but its been a while. Boy was I mad but glad I figured it out.

I still went back and tried to protect them again. Only this time it worked :)
