Problem connecting two computers together

Ok, I need to connect two computers together. One is running nt server, one is running win2k pro. i'm trying to connect using their ethernet cards. when i connect them, and check the status of the local area network, it says that it is connected, but when i try to connect to the other computer, only my computer shows up in the network. how can i make the other computer show up?
 
You need to make sure that each computer has an IP address, like 10.1.1.X, 10.1.1.x+1. Also, make sure that the subnet mask is the same for both. Usually the default is 255.255.255.0. Although it doesn't matter, make sure that both computers are in the same Workgroup. You can also setup either box to be a DHCP server, which will give out IP addresses automatically. Either way will work.
 
I'm still having trouble. I'm using a crossover cable to connect the two computers. I set up both boxes to use dhcp, which should give them their own ip addresses correct? Now when I connect them and click on my network places, even my own computer doesn't show up anymore.

The data that is want is on the computer running nt server.....

Please help... I need to transfer the data asap...
 
You only need to setup one box to be the DHCP server. Then set the other box to Obtain IP address automatically. This should give both computers an IP address.
