Post exactly what happens when you boot your PC.
Post exactly what happens when you boot your PC in safe mode.
Be very verbose - your above description tells me nothing. What XP window?
When did this start? When was the last time you successfully booted?

Details - we need details.

It is xp professional. I booted it after I shut my computer off one day, and when i rebooted, it gets stuck on when it comes to the xp screen, but the bar underneath is working, but it goes no further. I can boot it up with the nortons virus disk, and it comes to the a:\ prompt, but what do I put in at that point. I really need to solve this, please help. Thanks

So your saying you can only boot to the winxp boot screen and then it goes no further? It might be a corruption of the windows files, maybe you need to repair it. Stick in your winxp cd and reboot the computer. Click the option to repair the cd not the one where you reformat it.

Have you tried pressing the F8 key to bring up the boot menu?

If you can, try selecting the "Use last known good configuration..." option and see if it boots. Also try booting into safe mode. If you can get into safe mode you can use System Restore to go back to an earlier save point before this happened.
