I built a pc with a p4 3.4 ghz cpu, gig of ram, d915pbl intel motherboard, pcie ati x700. All components are installed, the computer will boot for thiirty seconds begin post, recognize all the devices present ram included, and it then shuts down. I can get power to run the fans, on the video card as well, from the 2x12 power connector, these will run forever, but when i plug in th 2x2 power connector the computer shuts down after 30 seconds or so. I tried a different power supply, i have a 500 watt ps now. I also tried the configuration of the power and reset switches, no luck. Someone please help, my diagnosis is a faulty motherboard, with a bad 2x2 power connector. thank you

 
Sounds like perhaps your HS/Fan is not installed properly causing the system to shut down due to heat. It could be on backwards or not seated properly. I once worked on somebodys computer that didn't remove the protective plastic coating strip from the HS base.

Your video or a peripheral card could be mis-inserted. Try unplugging all cards and starting with just your vid card and hard drive. Also, try re-seating your RAM.
 
Thank you very much u solved a very irratating problem for me. I did not realize the heat sink had to point a certain direction, i thought the illustration was showing an arbitrary angle. It is now up an running, thanks again. I asked at least ten other tech inclined individuals who had no answers for me.
 
A P4 with a non-symmetrical heatsink design? 😕 Uh...

...but the important thing is it's working now 😎 Enjoy!
