Problem archiving boss's PST

My boss is running dangerously close to the 2 GB mark on her PST. She is on Outlook 2000 on 2KPro.

I tried archiving it and came up with a nice 500MB archive. The problem is that the PST is still 1.92 GB after archiving. What did I do wrong?

I found the option to compact it. That worked well and got it down to 1.4 GB, but I fear that will slow down her Outlook performance.
