probe mobo in linux

First off, nice forum. Second, I'm not a tech, just a hobbyist.

I am wanting to upgrade a cpu in a Gateway GT5622 workstation. But I'm not sure what my MOBO can handle. Is there a way to "probe" the board to get some info about it. Right now a cat /proc/cpuinfo shows my cpu is "weak" as well as a Intel Pentium Dual CPU E2160 @ 1.80GHz.

Thanks in advance for any help

dmidecode

install that if you don't have it already and then

sudo dmidecode > filename

thats a pretty simple way to get it.. there is probably an easier way though.

That's what I was looking for. thanks.

The CPU that's already installed is a 65W TDP LGA775 CPU.

The problem that you will probably face in putting a faster CPU in there is that the board being used is likely very old, and the firmware (BIOS) may not support newer CPU's.

If you have a 65W or less TDP CPU sitting around, probably no harm in trying it. Although don't be surprised if the thing refuses to boot altogether.
