You guys really don't know and haven't been taught the history of this country, have you?

There's a President that they don't teach you about these days, I'm sure. President David Rice Atchison.

You see, Pres. Zack Taylor was to be innaugurated on March 4, 1849... only he refused, since it was a Sunday and people should be worshipping and not busying themselves with governmental business. These days people would be outraged at someone putting their religion above entering the office of the President... but in those day's it wasn't that big a deal and people felt better knowing that the person taking office would be a person who was devout... to the Lord first and then the country. So, David Rice Atchison, Speaker of the House was given the Presidency. By rights, the country could have said that since Taylor refused to take office, that now Achison was the new President... PERIOD, but they didn't... what Taylor was doing made sense to people and he was sworn in the next day.

Even Plato recognized that man could NOT rule himself... why is modern America so blind?

It looks like someone needs a refresher course in science - starting with the definition of "proof".

So let me ask you a question... if science cannot currently prove that something exists, then in your opinion is it impossible for that thing to exist or is it just that our westen idea of everything needing "scientific proof" is faulty?

Good for Taylor; I'm sure a similar concession would be made nowadays and I would have no problem with it, the same as I would have no problem with a Muslim or a Jew making a similar request. That doesn't prove America's Christian heritage, however.

You are absolutely right that is doesn't prove specifically America's Christian heritage.... though we all know there is one. What it DOES show is America's historical belief NOT that religion shouldn't interfer with Government, but that Government should NOT interfer with religion. By interfer, I mean try to control. Heck... I can find you historical documents that show CONGRESS passing laws to employ CHRISTIAN EVANGELISTS to go out to teach and convert Indians... does that sound like a Government that was totally seperating itself from religion?
