Probably an idiotic question about DDR1 and Dual Channel

Do both channels have to have the exact same RAM sticks, all 4 of them, or you can have different sticks as long as they're the same on each channel? All of this to enable Dual Channel.

I have matched 2 x 512 MB sticks on one channel and a lonely 1GB stick. If I bought another of the same 1 GB stick and filled all four slots for a total of 3 GB of RAM - thus having two different, but matched pairs - would Dual Channel work?

Thanks for helping an idiot with bad memory. :)

No, you are not an idiot.

Yes, the dual channel will work with two matched pairs on each channel

Assuming that the MOBO+bios likes the combination you should not have an issue. Some MOBOs will do it, others won't and the only way to know for sure is to install and test.
