probably an easy question if you know what you are doing (which I don't)

The topic summary pretty much explains it.

We have a Netopia 3347WG which is a wired (4 ports) and wireless (which we aren't using) DSL "Internet Gateway".

We need more than 4 ports so I would like to know if it is possible to use a Linksys BEFSR81 router with it.

I tried to simply plug the "internet" port on the Linksys router into one of the lan ports on the Netopia 3346wg but I couldn't access the internet nor could I access the Netopia 3346wg's setup page so either this won't work or there are some settings that need some attention. (or I am a stupid newbie, take your pick)

Anyone care to chime in here?

UPDATED QUESTION

Apparently one of the computers was being accessed by an office worker from home via Window's Remote Desktop feature. That no longer works. I can access the computer in question from another computer on the network but I cannot figure out how to do it from my home computer.

This is what I know:

-The computer name
-The login info for the above
-Both Local and Peer IP addresses from the Netopia 3347WG setup/status page (I've never heard those terms before  )
-IP of the computer on the network (192.168.1.103)
Connection Specific DNS Suffix
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway

Here is what I *think* I know:
The Netopia 3347WG has firewall capability but it doesn't appear to be in use (it seems to be in what is called "free and clear" mode).

I also think this may be a port forwarding issue but while I can find that setup page in the router I don't know what to put in there.

Hmmm, I thought I knew more but that's about it.

Anyway, is this a setting I need to make in the config for the router or have the settings changed for Remote desktop?

plug a cable from netopia lan into the befsr81 lan, do not use the internet port on the linksys. you then plug additional client computers into the lan on the linksys

Make sure to disable DHCP on your Linksys.

edit: I don't see anything about auto-mdix so you're going to need a crossover cable to connect them.

Go into port forwarding and forward TCP port 3389 to the PC in question. You will most likely want to assign a static IP to that PC so you don't have to reconfigure this every time.
