pro media ultras

They are among the best computer speakers made to date. I would say that they probably kick the **** out of most if not all home theater systems that you can get for around the same amout. Now obviously this hindges on "around the same amount." They certainly aren't going to rival a $1000-$3000 home theater setup... but they do cost 1/3 to 1/10 the cost. Most home theaters in a box aren't exactly great. You should be buying your own components, speakers, tuner, etc..

I'm talking of speakers around the 500 mark. Also do you have to have 5.1 recorded audio to get surround sound with the pm? Just how much fidelity do they have? Comparable to a nice pair of headphones? What types of music are they good with or are they more for games and movies with poor music performance? I'm really starting to want a good speaker setup. Also i've been looking at the swans 2.0s.

It doesnt go very long before another person brings up the Klipsch issue again.
Before everyone gets going I'll put in a word.

Do a search on the 5.1 issue. Its been adressed many times.
About the only thing we Anandtechers can agree on is that fidelity is subjective, even though it should be objective.
Many folks may like the extremes in bass or treble, even though one guy might say they stick out because of inbalance or poor drivers. This goes for ANY audio system. Its when you start getting into details that you seperate the true Audiophile from the average computer user who just wants good sound. I'm in the latter group. You'll have to decide where you fall.

They are better than a NICE pair of headphones. And I'm comparing with the $300 Bose stuff. Great with all music, though you may feel like tweaking with a software equalizer for best effect.
Plenty of folks have been plying the Swans. Just about everyone can agree they are on awesome 2.0 setup though many folks want surround for the games.
I would say the Klipsch's are probably better than a home system for the same price.
But as Wuzzup101 hinted, you are really making an apples and oranges comparison.

I have Klipsch speakers and they are amazing. I compare them to my friends box home theathre systems, he has 2, one a toshiba 5.1 with 600 watts, and the other a panasonic 5.1 800 watt system. The klipsch smoke both of his setups easily, and the klipsch bass is by far superior to his puny ones. I've also heard the logitech 680's and although they are nice speakers, I don't think they sound as good as klipsch's.

thread hijack, whats the proper way to pronounce klipsch? When talking to people I always say klipsotech or klips, but I have a feeling these are wrong. Thanks ! lol

It sounds as good or better (probably better) than my Yamaha 5.1 surround sound from about 6 years ago (and it kicks a$$!!) They are VERY good for games and music. I can listen to music for hours with these speakers and i'm not even using the best music soundcard. I have an Audigy ZS PCI and even with this it is great. The bass is very tight and not too boomy. To me it seems like there could be a little more highs but I don't think it is an issue with the speakers, it is an issue with the soundcard and I haven't tuned it in right yet.

For 5.1 I wouldn't look at anything else besides these if you can afford it.

Not sure, but my best guess is "Klip" combined with "ish", hard to explain

I think it's pronounced like klipch, the s is silent. And yes the ultras do indeed rock, I have one set for my computer and another for my living room setup. Nothing comes close to the ultra's subs in that price range and it rivals even a lot of cheaper home theater stand alone subs. I have a pair of sennheiser 570's and sony v900 studio headphones and while the headphones are slightly better than the ultras, they come pretty close.

blackinches thinks if you want lots of bass go with a logitech setup, but if you want clean balanced sound go with the klipsch.

So we meet again, eh Zap?

Anywho, I've never heard the ProMedia Ultras outside of BestBuy (and all the speakers sound the same there) so I really can't comment on them. While I do agree with Zap about the MegaWorks (I own them as well and got into a discussion about them with him in another topic) having a very balanced sound, you really can't go wrong with either set. The Klipsch set seems to have much more fame here and the only way to tell is to listen to them yourself. I realize that isn't always possible (I've never seen the MegaWorks in a store and so never listened to them before I got them), but you should try.

Remember that when you get your speakers that you can't just crank them out on the first day. Start out by playing them at a lower volume for a few hours. Turn them up a little and let them play some more. Repeat this process until you get a little above your normal listening level. Try to not turn them up really high for the next few days. After that, your speakers should be broken in. This can help prevent damaging the speakers/amplifier and make them sound a little better (mine got louder and a little clearer over the break-in course).

Also, I pronounce Klipsch as "Klip-shh", if that makes any sense.

Bose equipment is ridiculed by audiophiles the world round. Search head-fi.org for "triport" to see what they think of those headphones in particular, not to mention a few choice comments on the qc's hehehe... Also have a look at this site for commentary on their speaker systems and business model. Modern day snake oil, much like AOL and Sony.

The Klipsch are very nice speakers indeed, but if you want to equal even a modest set of headphones like Senn 280s or Grado sr60s, you're looking at a pair of studio monitors, starting at $400 and up - and that's for 2, not 5 speakers, and no sub. Don't exclude the Gigaworks if speaker-hunting, they're rebadged Cambridge speakers and excellent as well, many agree they win on the sats while Klipsch wins on the sub.

At last; I have been expecting you The J!

I agree with your assesment. Klipsch and Cambridge SoundWorks are both excellent speakers. It all comes down to your own personal hearing as to which one you decide to go with.

Hey guys, how much of an upgrade would the utlras be over my Altec Lansing ADA 995 5.1 system? I mainly use them for watching dvd's and music, not much gaming. Would it be a big enough difference considering the price? I imagine I could sell my Altecs for something on Ebay to help out. Also, I have the Santa Cruz sound card, so would it be better to just upgrade the sound card and keep the speakers? Looking for opinions!!

it's tough forming an objective opinion on comp speaks-so few places carry a large assortment of brands to listen to. Even the few that have several(bestbuy, etc.) have them stuck on a shelf being fed some signal from who knows what.
That said, I've been very happy with my Klipsch 4.1's for over 3 years now. An added plus is that the amps for the 5.1 and 4.1(don't think they even sell the 4.1 now) are fairly high powered-I've replaced the original satellites with Klipsch RSX-5's , the sound is great.

Klip-shh 😀 I think Ill start pronouncing it that way from now on unless anyone else here has any more input 🙂

I see you are also looking at a 2.0 setup, so is pure stereo an option? If so, I have a Harman/Kardon HK3480 stereo receiver which with 2 x 120 watts of high current power (available here for cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...&item=5749187856&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) combined with some nice bookshelf speakers (eg these axiom ones: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...&item=5750044640&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW), will give you absulutely beautiful sound for music and games (if your sound card's up to it).

Including delivery this combo is just over $500 US.

Music really comes alive with this receiver ... vocals, instruments, everything sounds great.

Another nice thing about the HK3480 is that it includes a dedicated sub out to a powered subwoofer if you feel the bookshelves lack bass ... so you can upgrade easily.

Just a thought ... ignore my suggestion if 5.1 is absolutely necessary.

For pure surround sound I can tell you that I have a pair of logitech z5500s and my neighbor here in the dorms has a set of ultras. There are plenty of people with home theaters in a box here also. The computer speakers in this price range kick the crap out of them... 🙂 I also have a friend up here who has the 7.1 gigaworks set (I believe it's the gigaworks set anyway). I know he loves it, but I have yet to stop by to listen to it. Listening to some classical music right now actually... quite good 😉
