Private Message Board... software?

I was wondering what options are open to someone that wants to set up their own message board. We have a site and would like to set up a message board on it that's just for a bunch of friends (though if others start posting there, we really don't care). What software is available? Is it hard to program your own?

If this is the wrong forum for this, I apologize, but I wasn't sure.
 
You probably want to post this in software instead of general hardware. There's lots of different forums or bbs software out there. Check out your favorite sites that have forums. Most of them list what software it is somewhere on the site.
