Private caller - how to figure out who it is

Just got a prank call, messed with them and had about 10 minutes of laughing myself. I think I know who it is but I want to make sure, how can I look up the number? *69 said it's a private number and that's it.

someone is using my phone as a fax machine, keep getting called in the middle of the night. for months now.

The only way you can look it up if it's marked private is to convince the phone company to give it to you.

Aren't the police able to look it up?

We had a continuous prank caller a while back and we had the police look him up and track him down, and eventually we took him to court. If it's a real problem and you're concerned about your ID and personal safety, call the police.

I'm honestly not too pissed about the prank call, it's just that if I had let it ring more my parents would have woken up and it might have ruined their sleep - calling and doing prank calls at midnight isn't funny IMO
