After seeing Jeremy Clarkson's review of it (don't remember which exact one it was), I am sure that people only buy them to be seen in.

Hahah, are you seriously trying to say it's a status symbol? :p Oh, how times have changed...

Yeah, it sort of is. Big, heavy luxurious cars are out, and stupid eco-douchemobiles are in. :(

Well, for the sake of full disclosure, I bought one in 2001, and then replaced it in 2004 with the new model. I'm still driving the 2004 model.

I wasn't particularly interested in the green-ness per se, except that it saved gas I and got some nice tax breaks. It made the car more affordable than the price alone would suggest. It's less attractive in 2012 since it has no tax breaks though.

Heh, somebody's sad and mad.

I don't hate on people who drive them for economic reasons instead of status-symbol reasons, but we are here on this Earth for a very miniscule time, and driving the 550hp car in my sig is WAY more f-ing fun than a Prius.

Plus I'm 'murkin, damnit!

The thing is, you don't have to get a hybrid to get 55MPG.
Just get a small diesel-powered car, and you're set. Hell, if you live in the UK, you can get a Citroën C2 that gets something like 82 MPG.

well the thing is, it doesn't matter how much mpg you get if you fly half way around the world every year for a vacation for instance..

550 hp? Where do you drive? In the Indianapolis 500? o_O

---

If I lived in the UK, I'd consider getting a diesel. In Canada it's a pain though, since most of the urban gas stations around here don't even have diesel. (Before I bought the Prius, I considered a Jetta TDI.)

Just saw someone driving a Prius today on the road.

What people don't get is that it takes A LOT of resources to make a Prius. Primarily Oil.

That sounds like that Hummer-is-less-wasteful-than-a-Prius article from years ago, which has since been discredited.

And the batteries dont exactly bio-degrade.
Good point, although they are recycled by Toyota. (Also, if your car is old enough to warrant it, you can also get used packs which use harvested good batteries from wrecks.)

Yet those people could have bought a cheap Focus or Civic or the like and truly could have saved money since most people won't recoup the added cost of the vehicle. It's definitely a statement vehicle.

I don't bash everything that's green. Just stupid shit, like hybrid and battery-powered vehicles.
I really think we need to push for hydrogen-powered vehicles.

I went with my friend to a job he had up in Santa Monica, you couldn't go 30 seconds without seeing one drive by. The other day I was almost home and saw 3 at one stop light.

Is anyone else surprised the Focus is 2nd?

Not really, it's a good value car.

Which is why the Corolla is first, of course. But I actually like the Focus more.
I am a bit of a Ford fan as of late, though.
