What's a hoon?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoon

Hoon is a term used in Australia and New Zealand, to refer to anyone who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviours. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives a car or boat in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, i.e. too fast, too noisily or too dangerously. In New Zealand, the term "boy racer" is also widely used. Another slang term, revhead—derived from "rev", an alternate term for RPM—is sometimes used in place of hoon. "Anti-hoon laws", while they generally concern road vehicles, sometimes also target anti-social behaviour in motor boats.

Hoon activities can include speeding, burnouts, doughnuts or screeching tyres.[1] Those commonly identified as being involved in "hooning" or street racing are young and predominantly male, although increasingly female, drivers in the age range of 17 and 35 years.[2]

Hoon control laws are beginning to be extended to dangerous and annoying hoon behaviour using boats and other vessels, particularly jet skis. The State of Victoria, Australia passed legislation in late 2009 to control hoon activities using recreational vessels.[3]

It gets limited use here Stateside. Ken Block is a hoonigan, he likes to hoon. 😀

I got the term from Jalopnik. Ricers are a sub-class of hoon who drive "souped up" (I use that term loosely) Japanese econo-boxes.

Thrush mufflers (aka fart cans) used to be illegal. I'm not sure when that got changed and what idiot thought it was a good idea to take it off the books.

Prius driver here. In my honest opinion there is a lower incidence of douchebaggery amongst Prius drivers here than on average. They tend to be a bit older and less concerned about performance. Often slow drivers, yes, but safer and boring drivers. That is not true of all of course, but probably there is a tendency to that.

The most common stereotype for car douchebaggery seems to me to be in the 16-30 male group, driving lowered or heavily modded vehicles, etc.
So I just looked this up.

Based on US NHTSA 2001-2007 data, Prius drivers have roughly half the fatality rate vs. the US average per million miles driven.

However, based on limited data (12 US states), there is an increase in low speed pedestrian accidents, I'm guessing due to the lack of noise.

IOW, Prius drivers are safer in terms of fatalities, but Priuses are too quiet for pedestrians leading to increased pedestrian accidents.

---

In contrast, the most dangerous group of drivers are between the ages of 16 and 29 by a large margin. The ≥70 group is also moderately dangerous, but less dangerous than the 16-29 group. The 30-69 group has a much lower fatality rate.

In the 16-29 age group, rates of fatalities are also much higher in men than women, but females in the 16-29 group still have a much higher rate of fatalities than either gender in the 30-59 age group.

To summarize, as I suspected, young male drivers are the worst. Women are safer drivers than men, but drivers in the 30-59 age group in general are the best drivers.

---

For the record, I am a Prius driver in the 30-59 age group.

They are pretty annoying but not as annoying or dangerous as the maniac pick-up drivers in Florida who tear around in their lifted up F-150s - F-350s - Get out ma way!

Yeah, back when I lived the prairies, I disliked the young drivers of those modded pickups too. Not a lot of those around here in the City of Toronto though. Those who have pickups here generally actually need them to haul stuff.

Instead, here we get Civics modded up the yinyang.

Prius drivers are annoying, yes. BMW drivers have to be the worst though.

What's the difference between a rose and a BMW?

Rose the prick is on the outside.

Prius drivers give used Altima drivers a run for their money. Altima drivers are the worst. They typically have one a gen or two older than what is current, have cheap looking aftermarket rims thrown on a base model. And they pretend to drive an Infiniti.

I notice more dents and body damage on Altimas than basically any other car.

Prius driver here, 52+ mpg in summer, no hypermileing. Been driving since I was 12 (farm pickup) and have driven or piloted too many types of vehicles to count. I've never really noticed a Prius type other than those of us who don't orgasm at the simple act of driving an automatic everything car and want to save money (I drive 600+ miles a week on average).

If there was a type of driver/vehicle I would stereotype, it would be as follows:

-old geezer/Caddy or Lincoln with the turnsignal always on

-20-35 yo male in any German sedan or Lexus SUV-bound to be an aggressive self centered A-hole who considers all the road his domain and the rest of the world as unwanted interlopers

-20-35 yo males in pickups/ 4 WD vehicles during the first snowstorm-you'll find them in the ditch five miles down the road

I generally drive 5 mph over the speed limit, I don't want to attract any speeding tickets, too costly for me.

BTW you ever notice the spoiler thing across the back window of a Prius? It does an excellent job of blocking headlights of tailgaters.

Don't even notice the Prius drivers around here. They're no better or worse than the average.

SUV and pickup drivers take the crown for worst/most aggressive drivers around here. Especially come winter. No, your vehicle doesn't make you invincible. No, tailgating me in the right lane during a snow storm is not going to make traffic move any faster.

Ricers/hoons are getting to be a big problem as well where I live. Have to listen to them tearing up the back all night with their fart cans. Pisses me off.

Thread winner right here...
