HAGERSTOWN, Md. - A prison work crew kept a toddler safe after the child was found wandering alone on a rural highway, Maryland authorities said.

The six minimum-security inmates shared their lunches with the boy and played with him, while authorities spent hours trying to locate the 2-year-old's relatives, a correction officer said.

A dump truck driver had spotted the toddler early Friday on a hilly quarry road near the Pennsylvania line, a trooper said. The trucker then handed the boy to the litter-picking crew for safekeeping.

I dunno why, but that line made me LOL.

Doesn't sound like a very smart truck driver, but kudos to the inmates.

I'm guessing they were *very* minimal security cons. Usually the road crews have a van with guards in it to watch the prisoners. It sounds like this group was left by themselves.

They shared lunch and laughs with little one who was teen sister's charge

the child was being watched by a teenage daughter, who later left without notice.

To make the OP title clearer, it appears the toddler was in the care of his teenage sister who "left without notice". Sounds like someone is in deeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep shat.
