Yeah. Don't they say, "After the snap, the passer was rushed" or "After the play" or something like that.

There are two types of penalties. Ones that happen before the snap and ones that happen after the snap.

Ones that happen prior to the snap depend on if the linemen are set in their stance and move too soon or wide receivers make a motion before they are supposed to or a receiver is lined up one too many to the line of scrimage, and others.

After the snap happens if receivers are bumped after 5 yards or so, offensive or defensive pass interference, offensive holding, illeagal block in the back, punching, etc...

yeah, but false start can only occur prior to the snap, so why do they bother to say it? they don't say "after the snap, pass interference"

Good save on the thread.

As for your question, if the player moves after the snap, well, it wouldn't be a false start then, now would it?

They also always say "on the offence" after saying "false start". Is there ever false start on the defecnce? Don't they call it offsides or encroachment?

The defense can be called for causing a false start by running and jumping at the OL....I think they call this the Neil Smith rule.

Because the defense doesn't start the play, the offense does...

cause usually the play is underway by the time anyone realizes that there is a penality.
