Printing from within Fedora.

Hello all,

I have an SMC7004AWBR wireless router. It has a print server on it that I am using very successfully from all my Windows machines.

I now want to use it for my Fedora machine. The driver SMC ships simply installs a new "port" on the Windows machine that points to the IP address I assigned the router and the LPT1 device port.

I am trying to trick Fedora into thinking that it is dealing with a JetDirect printer. It is asking me for an IP and a port. I am giving it the IP address I assigned to the router, but I do not know what port to give it.

Do you guys have any ideas?

Is there a better way?

Try setting it up as a LPR printer (unix print services need to be installed on Windows).

Nothinman,

I don't understand what you are saying. My printer is not attached to any windows machine. I don't want my Unix box to have to rely on a windows machine to be up and running in order to be able to print..

Which machine would have it set up as an LPR printer?

What I'm saying is the print server is probably running a LPR daemon. My comment about Windows was irrelevant since you're talking about installing on Linux, sorry. But if you did want to setup Windows to print to it via LPR you would have to install the Print Services for Unix.

the SMC allows printing via LPR. So in fedora, run the printtool program (also in the menu) and when you configure the printer, you will have the option for IPP printing or for LPR printing, either will work, just make sure that you point it to the proper IP address and port number. Which should be 9100 if it emulates a Generic Jet Direct card if I remember correctly.
