It's disappointing that you can't view the images unless you register with the site. Have you done the mod? You may want to note in the title that it also works for the IP3000 and IP5000 printers.

Why do you need to do all that??? My iP5000 does it straight out of the box once you install the software - it comes with a CD tray, and there's no plastic blocking the opening?!?!

US legal issue. Over there, some patent office airhead granted a patent to one printer manufacturer which keeps ALL other printer makers from offering direct-to-CD printing.

Everywhere else in the world, the Canon iP3/4/5000 printers come with the CD tray and capability.

Yeah, i live in Australia. That might explain it.

Usually, living in Australia is bad for computer gear (its more expensive, and availability is usually shocking). Guess not this time :)

Only Epson has the feature in the USA.

Canon, Lexmark, HP and any others don't have the feature.

The word is that Philips own the patent rights and Epson bought the exclusive North American rights to it.

It's a Seiko patent IIRC, Seiko having been swallowed by Epson quite a while ago.

thanks for this thread, I made my tray this afternoon out of cardboard. I should have remembered the old maxim "measure twice, cut once" - I cut out one of the reflectors at 107.25 mm instead of 117.25 and couldn't figure out why the printer kept ejecting it. Finally I reread the instructions and remeasured, blacked out the bad reflector and cut a new one, printed the first try.

Hey guys,
As most of you know, Canon PIXMA Printers have the capability to print directly to printable CD/DVD's (I have an IP4000 and mine prints nearly perfect discs)
This capability is disabled in the American versions but not in the European models.
A few of us got together and discovered a simple way to enable CD/DVD printing on these printers. The two parts you need (the cd Tray and the insert for printing mini-cd/dvd's are not sold in the US).
Well, myself and some of the people from a similar Forum have found a way to not only enable CD/DVD printing but also I have worked with some European contacts and am selling the parts needed to print cd/dvd's. (they are going pretty fast so you may want to act quickly)
The full descriptions on how to enable your Canons and the links to the software as well as how to get the parts can be found here: http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/view_topic.php?id=36631&forum_id=40&page=40
If you would like info on ordering the Tray and Insert, email me at canon_tray@charter.net and I'll be glad to set you up.
Finally, after much research and hours of contacting friends in Europe we have finally made this a reality.
Please email me at the above address if you care for a set of parts and links to instructions on turning on this function in US versions.
Regards,
Blake
