Printers are becoming disposable items..

Lifer
cost of printer ink catridges (1 black, magenta, cyan, yellow) = $88
cost of new printer after rebate = $89

whats the point of even refilling it?

((this is for a brother printer, I can't find generic refills 🙁 ))

I hear ya. Just got my first PC for home and have been looking at printers. Been looking at what the refills costs during my shopping and it is mind blowing what the ink costs.

The ink that comes with printers is usually only about 1/4th what you get with a refil cartrige.

I just bought 10 Brother generic refills from 123inkjets.com for $24. Shipping was kinda slow but the price was right.

Edit: That's 2 of each color plus 4 black cartridges.

I have purchased a new printer before because it was cheaper than inks.. Then I found places like 123inks.com (or something like that) -- Now that is where I order my ink from.

Get an HP Photosmart. The catridges are about $25 a piece, but are HUGE. In draft mode, my black catridge runs for several years before running out.

You think thats bad... Konica Minolta 1350W laser printer $70bucks after MIR (115w/o), cartridge rated for 3000 pages: $107.

Toner refill and reset chip for 6000 pager on ebay is ~25 bucks.

All in $CAD.

People need to go back to buying lasers. I think the average user probably prints in color once a year and then buys 10,000 inkjet cartridges in the same time frame while printing their college essays out.

thats why you buy canon inkjets... genuine canon inks are maybe 40$ for bw, c, y, m, b.... and they last a LONG time... i buy generic and can get a full set for 12$ tops

The are "HUGE" if you consider 11-15ml of ink huge. I prefer the canons which have 9 ml of ink PER COLOR, not 11-15 for all THREE colors, and they run $7-9 a piece for the official and ~$4 for generic.

BTW, that is based off of the most recent photosmart I looked at, which was that model that could do black and white prints due to the grey cartridge it had. I'm not sure if that is the newest model of printer or not but I don't think the cartridges have changed.

This is why I ALWAYS check on generics before I buy a printer (for me or anyone else). That's a deal-breaker.

Are you waiting for the ink to evaporate and then consider that running out?

I have had a laser since early 2003 and never once looked back. In all that time I have purchased a new toner cartridge *once* for ~$65 (new), and have printed at least 5k pages in total. Do I miss having an inkjet printer? Hell no. I just printed off 33 pages and it took only a minute.

*sigh* Anyone reminiscing about the old days when printers were almost free (or even make money after PM, coupon, rebate)?

True, for the cheap printers.

Most lasers and all good-quality HP inkjets have full cartridges.

so how do you "dispose" of old printers? I have a couple "old" printers (actually there are only like 1-2 yrs old...epson C82 and a canon something) and just bought new ones cause the ink cost too much (more than the printers i got lol). So now i have printers in my closet...where can you take things like these? i hate to just trash em but i dunno any charties around me that accept printers...just clothes and stuffs...

Oh, yeah. I have 3 printers that were free waiting in the closet for the current one to run out of ink.

Werd.

I've been using laser printers since 1996, back when they still cost like $500 (and I was in college, that bill HURT!). Currently using a laser (OK, digital LED, close enough) that I pulled out of a university library computer equipment dump. It's going strong after nearly 3 years, believe it or not.

Inkjet, schminkjet. Bah!
