Printer troubles, any ideas?

An Asus P3V4X mainboard, a Canon BJC-5000 printer, Win98SE. To print a document, I have to hit the print button about 4 times. The first 3 times it will give the error that unable to read response from the printer, check to make sure its turned on...yada yada yada. $th time it catches no problem and prints fine. Printer drivers are current. Is maybe the printer port dying?

Do you have it connected via USB or parallel? If parallel do you have the type of cable specified in the manual?

If its parallel, I agree with what hausdave said. You may have just boughten a cheap parallel cable, assuming it will work, instead of the proper IEEE cable, which is at worst "recommended" for newer printers.

Sounds like a connection problem, somewhere on the printer side. Make sure the cable is snug with the printer.
