My printer is connected to a Windows 2000 machine, and it is shared. From my system (Win2k), I can access the printer and shared folders. However, from my sister's computer (Win98), I get a prompt for a password when I try to add a network printer or browse the first computer through Network Neighborhood. The Windows 2000 systems can access the 98 one, but my sister can't browse our systems or access the printer.

How can I connect her system to the printer?

Thanks...

Alphazero,

Create a new account on the Win2K box. Now go to the Win98 machine and log into Win98 with the exact same account you created on the Win2K box. Now try to access the printer from the Win98 box and you should be able to do it.

Didn't work....

I created an account called Guest1 with password "server." The 98 box prompts me for a password only (no username) to access resource \\MACHINENAME\$IPC. I type in "server" and it tells me it's incorrect. I tried the same thing with the regular Guest account, and I get a message saying I have "No permission to access resource." Tried both accounts with blank passwords too.

Do you have "client for Microsoft networks" installed in your connection properties? Just a guess, I haven't used 98 in a long time.

did you change anything in the local policy on the win2k machine? double check the "Access this computer from the network" and "Deny Access to this computer from the network" policies since that would be reason the system would block access to the win2k machine.

and do you havel the windows 98 printer drivers on the windows 2000 system?

goto Printer Properties --> Sharing --> Additional Drivers

As long as you can ping either machine and you haven't changed any of the sharing permissions on the printer the following should fix the problem.

1. On the win98 machine look at network neighborhood properties and see what the network name is under the "Identification" tab.
2. Create an account on the win2k machine with the same name as under the identification tab on the win 98 box.

Now when you try and connect to the win2k machine put in the password you specified for the new account you just created.
