Well, what's the difference between the two XP machines? Are they both Home or Pro? Do they both have SP2? Are the firewall settings the same on both machines? More info please!

You need to add Netbeui on to the Windows XP machines ....Netbeui is on the is on the Win XP disk under : ValueAdd : MSFT : NET : NETBUEI...Just read the TXT file in the netbuei folder and it will explain ho to install it...also make sure all of the computers are in the same workgroup....it should work fine after that..

Hi, My only thought is did you load the Z22 driver on both XP machines? Jim
the drivers should be in xp, when i go to add the printer it says incorrect drivers may be installed and ask me to select the drivers from a list and i did that. I did it on both computers, it worked on one but not on the other

they are both pro, SP2, the firewall settings should be the same, i havent done anything to change them on either one but a game or other software program might have changed them. Anything else you need?

do i really need Netbeui to do it or is that just your personal preference because it worked on one computer with out Netbeui

the printer will work on the computer just being hooked up to it. but wont work on the network
the network is hooked up through a router

In Printers and Faxes, right click the printer and choose Properties. Click on the Ports tab and compare the two XP machines. See if there are any differences.

I think I'd uninstall it, reboot and reinstall. Something got hosed.

NetBeui is a quick fix for a lot of XP networking problems. It's easy to setup. It could be easier than trying to track down what's really happening.

Tutorial

Edit: The install on 98 is basically the same, but if I remember correctly the Protocal is already installed and available. You do need to bind it to your NIC.

A quote from the tutorial.

In many cases TCP/IP is working well with the Internet but it is not functioning for Local File/Printer Sharing. NetBEUI might "Bail" out and will allow Easy Local File/Printer Sharing.

In 98,

Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, and double click the Network icon. Click the Add button.

Click Protocol and Add

Under Manufacturers, click Microsoft and under Network Protocols choose NetBEUI.

You may need your 98 disk as 98 was kinda goofy that way. And you'll have to reboot.

There is nothing else to "do". Once NetBEUI is installed on all machines the usage will be seamless to you.

Do a google search for 98 and NetBEUI if you need more info. You should come up with all the info you need. Most of this is from memory and it's been awhile.

If it doesn't work there is no harm done. You can't really mess anything up and it is easily undone.

Edit: Go ahead and do all. Even the XP that's working.

Netbeui should not affect anything other than letting the Win 98 machine communicate with the Win XP machines ... install it on both of the XP computers and it is a piece of cake to install on the 98 machine if it is not already on it .... Its not a quick fix ..its actually the proper fix

ok, i installed netbeui on all the computers
the xp machine that worked all along can see both the 98se machine and the other xp machine
the xp machine that didnt work can see the 98 machine but cant access it, it say:
"computer" is not accessible , unexpected network error

the 98 machine can see the xp machine that originally wouldnt work but cant access it, it says :
cant acess "computer" network busy

both machines can access the xp machine that has worked all along

the xp machine that isnt working is real new, i just built it and it has gigabyte lan, the other two use 10 mbps, and the gigabyte is set to autosense, should i change it to 10 mbps as well?

By any chance do the two XP machines have the same computer name?

Disable the firewall on the XP machines temporarily as a test.

Are you running any additional firewall software?

I'd post this over in the Networking Forum. I'm certain I'm overlooking something but it's tough trouble-shooting long distance when you can't be hands-on.

Sorry.
