My trusty HP722C appears to be on it's last legs after 9 years of service. Can anyone recommend a good all-purpose ink-jet printer that does not rip you off on the ink cartridges?
(I know they all do to some extent, but some less than others)

Thanks!

Nice 9 years. All depends on what your needs are for the inkjet and remanufactured cartridges are not a bad thing. Tell us more what you looking to do with the printer.

color and black in for $1

After switching to Canon printers a couple years ago, I've turned my back on HP and all the others with high-priced ink kits. With the Canon, it's great getting 3 ink kits for about $12 shipped.

HP Laser is the SEX0RS!

Seriously, if you know you wont be needing color, a nice little HP LJ 1000 may be what you need.
A toner cartridge costs 45 bucks and prints about 4000 pages.

Are you still using a Parallel cable? If so, the last dependable printer I've used is an HP 895.

My experience has been that the newer printers don't pay much attention to thier parallel drivers anymore even when they offer the connection.

If you have USB or don't mind getting a USB card, the new Canons are hard to beat. The Canon Pixima 3000 is as cheap as $60. The Pixima 4000 was $135 last I checked. They are fast, quiet, and cheaper (many options too!) with ink.

I have the old I850 on USB. On parallel it was ok, but on USB it is excellent. Text with color at several per minute, Standard 8 x 10 photo at 1 per minute, HQ 8 x 10 photo at 2 minutes. Canon ink costs $40 for a set of 4 colors and lasts me 6 months.

Canon IP3000 or IP4000.

The PIXMA series from Canon is even not too bad for ink cost using Canon's actual cartridges :)

Canon PIXMA series. If you want to keep ink costs down, get one of the ones with 5 individual cartridges(C/M/Y/K/K). I love my iP5000. I think the iP3000 and iP4000 also have 5 ink tanks each.

Another vote for Canon - I love my iP3000, but wish it would die so I could justify buying an iP4000 as most of the Pixma models are on deep sales plus a $20. rebate ($70. if you buy some models of Canon digicam too - don't need to buy from same store). Swiftink.com sells excellent ink at less than half the cost of OEM tanks.
. The Pixma models below 3000 use combo ink tanks with very little ink in them so if you print a lot, you might become irritated. So go for a 3000 or higher. The 4000 is Consumer Reports current "Best Buy" at the $150. regular price. I wonder what they would think of it at the under $100. AR price you can generally get it for now - Outpost.com had it for $80. AR last week.

i've always been an HP diehard, but i chose a canon ip4200 for my upgrade. i had high hopes as hp's new deskjet 8250 was gonna be my next printer, but i read that it has mediocre print quality...and it doesn't really give you much of the way in new technology (no, seperating the print head and inks do not count!).

the ip4200 gives you separate, replaceable ink carts, a 9600x2400 1-picoliter print drop (compared to hp's 4800x1200 4 picoliter drops) and it's $130, compared to the 8250's $199.
