printer recommendation for <$150(total)

you guys have any recommendations for a quiet decent quality durable inkjet printer with cheap cartridges that's below my $150 total budget? Thanks.

Canon it'll be then. Pick a single-ink-technology model from their i series; maybe you can get a bargain on a high end model from the older S series.

Canon. Canon. Canon. Grab i850 if you can (maybe possible with coupons, rebates). Or i550 or any high-end S series. Guess I just repeated what Peter already mentioned.

yup, both posts up above are correct.. canon is probably the best brand to get right now.. i personally have the s600 and i don't have any problems with it.. it does everything i need and is perfect for my network at home...

definently look into the i550 or i850 series.. if you are looking at printing a lot of digital pictures, then definently get the i850 one as it'll give you near picture perfect quality.

Also ask him how much he paid for it. Ask him to send you a print-out from his lexmark and compare it w/ your print-out. By the way, $130 is a very good price for i850. W/ your Canon printer, you can get a cheap replacement ink cartridges (as low as $1.29 at megatoners). Even at BM stores, "official" canon cartridges are much cheaper than those of either Lexmark or HP.

Print quality matters? It is much nicer looking than the 10 year old HP deskjet 520 it replaced. The ink costs far too much, however, at $40 a cartridge the printer is almost disposable. What's that add up to, $5000 a gallon? My biggest beef is the drivers. For some reason, the install was some 400 MB. FOUR HUNDERED MEGABYTES! Installation took me 5 hours and a zillion reboots on my windows 2000 machine. Just for laughs I installed it on the '98 machine. Insert cd in drive, autorun, reboot, done. Scanning capability is nice to have.

So, you were saying there's a printer with cheap ink? I need one.

I don't think i'll ever buy another inkjet printer. They seem cheap at first, but the prices they charge for ink these days is insane. And whats worse, my Epson would clean the print head EVERY time i would turn it on, which wastes even more ink! I don't think i ever got more than 100 sheets printed before it started complaining about getting a refill. And $30 for black and $40 for color is insane.
So I switched to a laser. They might cost a bit more to purchase (although a good one can be gotten for under $200 these days), but the cost per page is a lot less, something about 2000-3000 sheets from a $60-70 toner. The only downside - no color. But I never used that anyway, so I could care less. If B&W text is what you print 99% of the time, then i'd highly recommend a laser.

I just received my new Canon i850 today. I bought it from Dell SB when the had 20% off. SO I got it for $119 with free shipping. It is great and the cartridges won't break the bank either compared to other brands. It looks and feels like much better quality than the HPs, Epson, and Lexmark in the price range.

I got my i850 today and I love it. Its way better than my old multifunction crap. The photos it prints are great too.
