Printer Problems/ Cant find port

Hi,
I am writing this for my brothers computer. He has an older 400 mhz pentium 2 with pretty basic stuff. The problem is the printer. It is an HP DeskJet 712C. He recently formatted the hard drive and now when trying to install the printer i get a messsage saying that the computer can not find a printer hooked up to any of the parrallel ports. No ports found. The printer used to be hooked up to the scanner and then the scanner hooked to the port. I tried it like this and just hooking up the printer without the scanner. What could be the problem? Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Check the device out in the device manager to see if there's a flag or if it's actually showing up working correctly. Check to make sure the cable is working correctly. I've had alot of problems with the parallel port in the past. Make sure the right drivers are installed for that printer as well cause the OS might not have it. Good luck.
