the other day i was printing checks with quicken 2002 new user edition, and everything was running smoothly until a paper jam occured. i very carefully took the paper out leaving no damage. then pressed the button on my printer (hp-deskjet-940 c) to let it know that the jam was fixed, it started printing again but not correctly...like some kind of differnt alphabet...these weird symbols. so i thought i would exit quicken restart my laptop and try printing something besides checks to make sure the printer worked correctly be4 destroying more checks :| as soon as the computer got fully booted up and inside win xp pro my printer would not stop printing these symbols again. so then i was in a store found a good deal on the hp photosmart 1215 printer and bought it, put it on my laptop, went to install it but before i even installed it, the printer started printing these symbols again. wtf! :| it cant be the printers anymore. it must be my laptop! what should i do??? please help!!

Make sure you have no jobs stuck in the print queue, stop and restart the queue via Admin Tools.

Uninstall any printer related software or drivers, re-install from scratch.

Also did you do this for your old printer as well? I have seen many printers do this and a power off of the printer and a clear queue would fix it

Good idea - Wouldn't something stuck in the queue normally just halt the printer instead of making it print in ASCII or whatever?

This is a long shot, but try a different parallel cable if you have one.

I'm gonna hijack this thread to ask a question: Does it make a difference in print speed if you use a parellel or USB cable?

Parallel actually has a higher transfer rate (2 mb vs 1.5), but you'll only see a difference if the limiting factor is the interface - For most printer pumping out text, the engine speed of the printer is the limiting factor by far. On extremely large graphics files, there would be a noticeable difference in transfer times, but the processing time required by the printer would still likely be the limiting factor.

USB is too much hassle to be worth while, even if you ignore the fact that it's slower.
