Printer kicked the bucket. Suggestions for a new inkjet?

My beloved Epson Photo 700 has gone to printer heaven. Made the mistake of ordering generic ink cartridges from compgeek and the crappy ink in them jammed up my printhead. 🙁

Anyways I'm looking to get an inkjet printer in the $100 - $150ish range and would love to hear some opinions on what people own (or recommend) and how they like it.

-----------

Extra stuff:
A couple I'm considering is the Epson Stuylus Photo 820
And the HP Deskjet 940c

The Epson 820 is pretty tempting as after coupon and mail in rebate it'll be $70 + tax ($149 regular)
The HP would after coupon would be $120 + tax.

However one thing that's foremost in my mind is cost of printing. I don't want to get some printer that eats ink cartridges like there is no tomorrow. Based on that I'd probably be willing to pay a little extra to have a printer that is frugal on ink consumption.

DO NOT get a Lexmark. I hate mine, it has a problem with paper alignment. BTW is a Z43, i think it was about $100. HP iks the way to go from my experience.

hey bro, I have an Epson C80 and I would put it again damn near any other printer in the stores. Extremely high quality prints, both photo and simple text, and it has the multiple color troughs so when one runs out, just change it for $8, instead of $30 for an HP cartridge...

I've had an HP for 4 years now, an 870, and have had absolutely NO problems whatsoever.

My company buys them exclusively too. I think we have over 50,000 workstations company-wide.

HP printers have rarely, if ever, given me problems.

My wife has a Lexmark Z11, it's not bad but it's color matching leaves a LOT to be desired.

Anyone know what the ink life is on a HP? Epson says one cartridge does 540 pages at 5% coverage but I can't find diddly for the HP printers.

In my experience, epsons have the cheapest cartridges out there. My sister has an epson 880 and one of her black cartridges is like $3, compared the $20 one for my lexmark z42. Sure the epson goes through cartridges faster, but I don't think my cartridge equals nearly 7 of them. so, I'd think the epson would have better ink consumption than the hp.

my $0.02

Damn your doing a good job of convincing me.
The black and color cartridges blows away anything I've seen
Black: 1240 pages text ISO/IEC 10561 letter pattern); 870 pages graphic (5% coverage)
Color: 420 pages (5% coverage per color)

The 820 is:
Black: 540 pages text (ISO/IEC 10561 letter pattern), 378 pages of graphic (5% coverage)
Color: 220 pages ( 15% coverage)

The big question though is, how is it's photo printing quality?

if you go with the HP route, get anything BUT the 940. IF you look at the type of ink that every HP 9xx uses, the 940 uses a different type thats half capacity. You want a printer that uses the HP 45 cartridge. THe 940 doesent.

HP makes very nice printers indeed, although Epson and Canon are also decent in the inkjet market.

A HP LaserJet 4M Plus (over 7 years old!) just got serviced here for the first time in its life, and works fine again. (Been used a lot during that time, had just started to print small stripes on the edges of the paper) Cost us like $150 dollar to fix it 😉

you can substitute hp45 for hp15 no problem at all. HP is so fvcking stupid trying to fool consumers like you and me. The only difference between 45 and 15 is one with 42ml (high capacity) and another with 22ml (low capacity)
I have a 940c myself, I am getting neither one of these, I think I will buy refill kit or something 🙂

I just got the Epson C80 not too long ago. Thanks to Staples coupons, and the rebate it had, the price was right.😉

My Epson Photo 750 is dying as well... Im gonna blame it on the cheap catridges as well, because it was perfect till i went with the cheap stuff... Ive had such good experiences with epson though, i wanna stay with them... Looks like i might be buyin a C80 soon 😀

Hmm, either way I'm going to have to buy non-generic cartridges. My father has an officejet k series printer and he says he loves it. On the other hand I really liked the photo printing quality of my 700, but the C80 is fast, has individual color cartridges, and waterproof ink. Talk about decisions to make. :/

Thanks to everyone who has been throwing their 2 cents in, it's quite helpful!

I ended up thinking about this a lot and realized I didn't to pay out the nose for retail cartridges so picking a printer where the printheads got replaced with the cartridge seemed the best bet.
As awesome as the Epson C80 is I'd have to always get retail cartridges for it which means paying close to $30 for black and over $30 for a color set. If I use generics on the epson I risk wasting the printheads on it like I did on my Epson Photo 700. Much as I love the photo print quality of the Epson Photo printers I want a printer that if I use a generic cartridge worst case scenario is I have to replace the cartridge which replaces the printhead too.
I ended up getting a refurbished HP Deskjet 952C from compuvest.com for $91. It was $118 and change shipped with a 3 year extended warranty.
The other nice thing is my father's printer uses the same exact cartridges as mine so I can order a bunch at a time and split the cost with him.
If anyone else is interested in this printer check out this thread.
