Printer ink cartridges

I'm looking for a color printer to replace my Canon S600. I've looked thru the printers at several stores. Many of them carry HPs and Epsons, but not too much Canons.

I'm a bit partial to HP because the printers that I saw only had two cartridges: one for black and one for color. Do you use this as one of the factors in buying a printer?

Personally, I prefer being able to refill the colors that have run out. I haven't quite found the advantage to using single cartridges, yet.

I'd rather have individual cartridges for each color than one for all.
With the newer "chipped" cartridges, you'd have to replace an entire cartridge just because one color ran out...
Not sure about refilling chipped cartridges. I've heard you can, I've heard you can't...I think it depends on manufacturer.

I use only OEM cartridges...no aftermarket cartridges, no refills.

Disposable printers? Ha! I've looked at the reviews for printers, and so far, none of them really touch on the cartridge issue. It'd be nice if someone actually did a cost-of-ownership comparison.

i read a report that mentioned that the chipped ones still have a LOT of ink in them when they tell the printer they are "out" of ink.

i swear ink cartidges are a bigger scam then razors.

Kodak is advertising heavily that their inkjet printers have the lowest cost of consumables on the market...

Edit: Printer manufacturers do follow King Gillette's business model: give away the razor, profit from selling blades!

What are you using the printer for and how much are you printing? You can get a decent color laser printer like the HP 2600N for under $300 these days.

Avoid Epson like the fucking plague, there was a thread here a few days ago about how some of the newer printers will not let you keep using an ink cartridge, even if it's FULL, if it's been removed/reinserted. Someone put one in without removing the plastic on the print head, pulled it out to take it off, bam, cartridge is worthless.

IMO, just look for a SlickDeals FAR (free after rebate) Laserjet deal. I've got a color Brother laser printer I got for the tax on $300 after rebate and pricematch, and a few Samsung monochrome laser printers I got for -(that's negative)$18 after rebate/pricematch.

Do color lasers do well with photo prints? I'm planning on using it to print greetings card, envelopes, and maybe some 4x6 photos. I already have a B&W laser for text document, so this is mainly for the graphical use. I almost bought an Epson Workforce 40 (with Ethernet networking), but after reading the reviews, I did not think it was worth it. Now, I have my eyes on a Canon IP4600, but I'm still holding back in hopes of finding one that is network-ready. But, if I don't find any in the next few hours, I'll just bite the bullet and get a print server along with it.

I haven't tried printing photos with mine, I don't think it would be as good as a photo inkjet printer though. I use an hp photosmart 8450 for printing pictures, I rarely change the ink out on it. It's got a built in Ethernet port 🙂

Better in some ways, worse in others. I am not sure if there is any photo paper that goes through color lasers? If there is, it should be about equal (though obviously it will depend on the printer in some ways). The big advantages to color laser are:

* It looks MUCH crisper and professional for printing
* The toner never dries out (I have been using the same cartridges for about three years now)
* The overall per page cost is less than half that of inkjet printers

I'd put in money on a color laser once my b&w one dies out. I was very tempted with getting a color laser, but my application for graphics is mostly for art & crafts related stuff.

By the way, I just realized that the Canon IP4500 Pixma seems to be popular. It's out of stock from most stores. The ones that have them in stock are selling them over $30 above MSRP. Wow! It seems the IP4500 has better ink usage than the IP4600.

I agree on the scam issue.

Fortunately, when my Canon says it's out of ink...there's only a dribble left in the sponge...and nothing in the tank.

I did a printer-cost project for CS201 a couple of years ago. IIRC, the amount of printing you get from an $80 laser toner cartridge is about equal to $350 worth of ink cartridges.

I keep hoping the memjet printer will actually come to fruition...

I have an IP4500 and love it. Best printer I have had out of over a dozen. Individual cartridges, and great oem replacements from Swift Ink. Beautiful color prints and really decent test.

I tried looking for one, but nada. Ebay is my other option, but I need a color printer this week. Tsk.

I think I decided on a Canon PIXMA MP620. I figured the built-in Ethernet port will make it easier to share with the other computers.

I like single. I print in color so rarely that it's I'd just as soon not keep track of three extra cartridges instead of one.

single TANKS (not rip-off CARTRIDGES)

used to love my canon with the individual tanks retailing at 5,99 or generics for 2,99 on ebay. fuck carts
