To mechmeteo,

A somewhat vague question-----but that amount of money will buy you a very good printer---in fact half the money will due.
But its still a somewhat complex question---what is your antispated printing volume---do you need color---do you want to do photoprinting---do you want to go monochrome laser as those bucks won't buy a color laser--if you go inkjet will you consider better economy through refilling which involves a learning curve.---and do you want just a printer or would it be better to have
some additional fuctions like print, scan, copy, and fax?

But one word of general advice----evaluate a printer not buy purchase price alone but by what it will cost you in the long run
when you consider consumable costs also.

Once you identify what you need, these forums can help you better.

I've used Epsons and HPs for a lot of graphic printing and the HPs does the best on Photo Prints where quality prints are imperative. The color Laserjets are great, the inkjets very good. Epsons are the poor man's quality printer with good results. The color replacement cartridges are cheaper than HPs.
Canon has some very good inkjets and I used a Canon quite a while ago and the newer inkjets have produced excellent results. It really depends what kind of results you are seeking. Check the reviews and the feedbacks. Good info before buying is the key here. Good hunting.

In general, Lasers are great for those who seldom print---because they tolerate long periods of non use. And monochrome lasers are really great for high volume users as per page costs are low. But your budgit is too low to get a entry level color laser---where the basement cost is usually $300 US.
And color lasers are good but stumble at photoprinting.

Inkjets add the easy color option---for prices as low as $20. US -----but carry a huge risk of eating the consumer out of house and home with high ink consumable costs. And the clear economy leader in the inkjet world are the non-chipped Canons using the BCI-3&6 style cartridges. These printers in general will produce B/w text output nealy as good as a Laser---at about twice the cost of a monochrome laser when the Canon printer uses OEM cartridges.------but OEM cartridge costs can be slahed by a factor of up to 7x if the consumer uses readily available thirdparty prefilled cartridges.----and up to 15x if the user refills their own cartridges.-----which means you can beat a monochrome laser on per page costs-----and can get excellent photoprinting and general color printing as well. ------and I own two such non chipped Canons----the ip4000 which is my wife's printer and I use a MP 730.---two great sites to get printer advice are the nifty stuff forums and steves digicams-------the non chipped Canons are getting hard to find-----but I would look for a Canon pixma ip3000, ip4000, or ip5000 as the best general purpose recommended printer------even the better ip5000 would give you a chunk of change back------look on ebay if possible-----avoid the new chipped Canons like the ip4200&5200
unless you plan to use OEM cartridges only.-----but they will be great choices if and when a chip resetter comes onto the market for the new chipped Canon printers.

But if you have zero color printing needs-----get a monochrome laser------I have heard good things about both HP and Samsung lasers.

Hp Laserjet

HP 1220c

You have 2 choices. The laserjet prints the best and this inkjet comes in a close second. The inkjet prints very large prints, 11x17 up to 16x20.

The laser would be a better choice if your're printing occasionally and mostly monochrome.
The inkjet for wide format printing and frequent usage. As explained above thread, occasional use will need more printer head cleaning.

You make the choice, you got the options and you can stop here and pick what's best for you or continue wherever. Good hunting.
