Print to local printer when using RDP

My wife's accountant uses RDP from XP Pro to remote into the "server" at my wife's office from her home. The "server" is also running XP Pro.

I set her up years ago so that when she is in the server she can print to the printer connected to her computer at home. The printer has died and she will be getting a replacement.

I cannot for the life of me remember how I did it. I had an acquaintance explain how to do it. I remember it was actually easy to do but I just cannot remember how. I seem to remember him saying that it was a piece of cake with an HP printer. It was.

How do I do it?

Install the printer as you normally would on her XP PC. If nothing has changed on her PC settings, she would be all set configuration wise.

However, the setting you're looking for is available if you start RDP (don't connect yet), click the Options button (to bring up all the details/tabs), click the Local Resources tab, and then check Printers.

Let's say you have a computer "A" that you want to remote into. You are using Computer "B".

Computer "A" has to have the printer drivers installed on it for any printer you want to print to, including any printers that are attached to Computer "B".

Well, two different answers. Maybe both are correct as I was aware of the setting within the RDP configuration.

The drivers on the server sounds very correct to me too. I'm wondering how I'm going to install them. I'm remembering now that the drivers were built into XP for her old printer.

I'm guessing I'm going to have to install it as a network printer as the install will not proceed as a local. I'll have to look at the HP site for driver versions. She said she was absolutely not going to get an AIO and that's exactly what she bought. A C8180.

She's a flake.

You have three ways to get drivers when trying to print to a local printer:
1) Install the printer drivers on the remote "server"
2) Take advantage of the two drivers that are built-in on the Server. These are basically "standard" HP drivers (like basic drivers for an HP Inkjet printer). There are also naming conventions that you have to follow. A Google search will uncover how you have to name the printer.
3) Install a "Universal Printer Driver" on your "server". Unfortunately, these are pretty pricey. But they do work. In a large company, they are the way to go.

There are other options. If it's a "real" server, you can use a Citrix client, with built-in universal printer drivers. Or, I believe that some of the premium non-Microsoft remote access clients (such as "GoToMyPC") have universal printer drivers built in.

I want to thank everyone for their help.

I downloaded the IT Professional Use Only Drivers (made me feel like a big shot), and did the install routine. I went to add printers and selected the printer from the list. I logged in as her, set that printer as her default and she is off and running.

Thanks to everyone!

Go here and download the triCerat Screwdriver Client. After it is installed goto your control panel and open the Screwdriver Client, goto the middle tab, select the printers you want to use and add them to available printers, hit apply and your good to go.

Tricerat's ScrewDrivers software isn't free. I'm assuming that your link is the client only. You still need the Server portion and a license for it if you want to use it more than 30 days. Tricerat now has an XP-only version for those who don't need the Server version.

You're right. I've never went to triCerat's site, I didn't know you needed a Screwdriver Server. Since we use Applied's TAM Online I never knew it wasn't free either since they make no mention of it. Sorry.
