Print Server Question

I have a question about print servers. I'm looking at getting one so the 3 computers on my lan can share my regular printer and my photo printer without leaving a computer on with windows print sharing. Where does the print server get the drivers for the printer, or does each computer have to have drivers for each printer? Also, will my router assign my print server an IP address? I assume so...

Think of a print server as an alternate way to connect to a printer instead of using a parallel port. So, a driver would need to be installed on each PC then "pointed" to the print server.

Each workstation has to be pointed at the print server to know how to find a printer. This is usually done by IP address. Since your router hands out dynamic addresses, the print server might not get the same one each time. I'd recommend manually putting the print server on a static IP. They CAN use dynamic IP's but it's not recommended.

One last note - Make sure both your printers have parallel ports - I've seen a few photo printers which were USB only and that won't work with most inexpensive print servers.
