Print Screen stops working

This is a problem I and all my co-workers have at work. I've never seen it anywhere else.

The printscreen button will no longer send an image to the clip board if the computer has been on for more than 6hr - 2days (seems random within those times). When the problem first starts to creep up it will take a picture and when I paste it is is all black, except for text which becomes transparent.

Furthermore, every other program I use that can do screen captures, Ansys, UG, etc. will no longer take screen captures. I am assuming they must use the same program that printscreen uses.

When I contacted IT about it they told me they had never heard of the problem and I could put in a request for screen capturing software, which probably wouldn't even fix the problem.

This is VERY annoying because it usually takes me 45 minutes to reboot and get everything openned back up. (Because our network and UG sucks)

The computer has Windows XP, Dual Xeon processors (can't remember the model, they are recent ones, though) and 3GB ram

"I'm having a problem with my computer; some basic functionality has stopped"
"Don't worry we can probably order a $100 third-party program to replace that"
typical can't-be-bothered level of IT support.

Try reinstalling your graphics drivers, just to humour me, and see if that helps. Latest version of course.

Other than that I'm out of ideas, sorry!

They install an image on all of our computers that is the same image, even though there is a lot of different hardware floating around. The problem affects pretty much all of my coworkers, so it hasn't been just since I installed new software. So I think it is an issue with the image, which includes all kinds of crap.

I have tried to figure out a pattern with it, and for me it usually happens after I've been running UG and/or Ansys for awhile. But people in other groups that don't use Ansys or UG still have the problem I don't think it happens as quickly to theirs (i.e. mine might stop working have 6 hours theirs might take 2 days to stop).

The other symptoms I get at the same time is if I try to open "Winphone" I get the error "The Win 16 Subsystem has insufficient resources to continue running. ..." and I'll also get the "Windows is out of virtual memory" error.

This is all after just doing normal everyday engineering work, excel a little ansys some UG. I am not running CFD or even strenuous Ansys stuff.

Roguestar: I'll see if I have enough permission to reinstall the video drivers.

Have you checked the virtual memory? I'd venture to say that could be a possible issue with the print screen function as well. You may run out of VM and thus be unable to cache the data temporarily to the clipboard for pasting.

How would I go about checking it/clearing it? I have the size of the page file set to the max on both hard drives. Is it better to let it be "System Managed?"

BTW: Specs:
Win XP SP2
Xeon 5150 @2.66GHz
3GB Ram
Nvidia Quadro FX 1500 (Driver Ver. 8.4.8.0, going to try to get that updated)
I don't know what the mother board is...

System managed just means the system will take care of making it bigger or smaller as needed. But if you have it set to the max size I would doubt this would be an issue. When you go to the task manager what is the amount of memory used? As well as VM

Okay, it just stopped working again.

Physical Memory:
Total 3145092
Available 2070768
System Cache 791752

Commit Charge
Total 1881604
Limit 6163228
Peak 2295940

I've never seen it either. If it was that prevalent, I'd do a manual rebuild of a "problem PC" from scratch, adding applications and drivers one at a time until PrintScreen stops working.

On another level, I've seen mysterious printing errors fixed by trying different levels of PostScript or PCL drivers. I've seen this problem with AutoCAD.
