Heard of the hype, decided to see what the hype was about, convinced of the hype.
I had high expectations before watching the anime, and unlike most movies, it lived up to it. I really think I'm gonna have to buy the DVD, but the extras are a little bit lacking; actually, it's lacking a lot and I would have very much preferred they stuff a bunch of stuff in the DVD. For the first half, I kept on trying to identify who's the bad and good guys are, but realized there are none since everyone's trying to fight for their survival, and a little bit more. I thought the ending was satisfying, but could have been better. The English accent of Lady Eboshi was distracting, but the voice was really nice nonetheless.
Never been much of an anime fan, but more anime like this and I'm a convert. The first "real" anime I've watched was Akira, and thought it was freaking weird (before that was DBZ and Tekno Man American versions) and never liked it. Then saw Neon Genesis Evangelion which stole the title from Akira several times over, but I actually liked it because the characters were much more likeable and relateable for the most part, but I'm sure that's partly because character development had 26 episodes to do it in. Then after reading about Spirited Away here, I watched that also but didn't really get into it. People kept on saying how it's so deep - would those people enlighten me? By that, I mean your own interpretations, and not what you've ripped from other people and online sites.
And then Mononoke was the one I watched next. The main point was easier to grasp without needing to know much about Eastern philosophy. There was never really a slow or dull moment in the movie. Very awesome. The thing that annoys me are the critics who say this is an anime version of Star Wars. George Lucas borrowed the idea of the Force, and the balance of it from Eastern philosophy, and not that the Princess Mononoke borrowed part of its theme from Star Wars. Stupid critics.
