So you've got a fancy new, high core count CPU w/ a nice AIO cooler to show off? Want to make sure that cooler is doing a proper job of actually cooling your CPU doing some of the most strenuous calculations your fancy CPU will most likely ever see? Want to help advance the sciences of Mathematics in the process? Help Team AnAndTech to boot? Well, keep reading.

PrimeGrid is a BOINC project that, as you might have guessed, searches for Prime Numbers. There are thousands (possibly an infinite amount) of Prime numbers. Thousands of them are known primes, but there are still new Prime numbers that haven't been discovered yet. You could find yourself a Prime number and be credited in the scientific community as the person who discovered the number. I've found 3 myself. One day I plan to print one of them on a large piece of canvas and display it in my flat for everyone to see, but it's over 950,000 digits long, so I gotta be creative on how to get it to fit.

Anyway, back to PrimeGrid. PrimeGrid is currently running a 10-day long Challenge that searches for Prime Sierpinski Problem LLR Primes which the last one found was over 3 years ago. You could be the one to find the next one!

The team, as of this post, is currently in first place, but that could change.

1629037883199.png

We have a little over 7 more days to go on this, so we could use some help in keeping us in first place.

What do you need to do?
Well, first and foremost you need to install BOINC. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
For this project, you do not need to install the Virtual Box version, but it wouldn't hurt if you do.

Then you need to head over to www.primegrid.com/ and create an account. Then join the team https://www.primegrid.com/team_display.php?teamid=132

Then, you need to go into your preferences https://www.primegrid.com/prefs.php?subset=project and select the
Prime Sierpinski Problem LLR (PSP)
Once In a Blue Moon Challenge project
Make sure you ONLY select this project for the contest. Do not check any other projects.

Then head over to this thread: https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/primegrid-challenges-2021.2589211/page-17
Post what CPU(s) you are going to run on this challenge and one of the Team members will let you know the best configuration for your particular CPU as each one is different. The tasks consume a LOT of L3 Cache, so you can only run 1 or 2 tasks per CPU on the project, but you'll want to make sure all the cores/threads or half of them are running the task at the same time as well. No need to worry, just post your CPU model/make and we'll help you along.

Once this is done, you'll need to attach PrimeGrid to the BOINC software you installed in the first step. Simply click Tools | Add Project search for PrimeGrid and select it. You'll use your email address and password you used to sign up for PrimeGrid to attach the project. Do not attach the project until you've set a specific task limit and thread limit per work unit or the tasks may end up running for so long it wouldn't complete before the challenge ends.

This is definitely a good test for proper cooling and system stability since it utilizes AVX2. If your system can run a Primegrid LLR project for 7+ days it can probably run just about anything.

Yep, changes several times during the day: graph

This is definitely a good test for proper cooling and system stability since it utilizes AVX2.
Well, strictly speaking, it actually selects the best available vector math implementation which a given processor has on offer, up to AVX-512. On top of that it has got an internal error detection and correction mechanism, which goes as far as trying out a differently sized transform if errors pop up.

After completion of any task, the user can look it up at the results table on their primegrid.com user page and can check whether everything went through validly, or else can view the error log. (Or before result upload, still while jobs are running, you can look locally for "slots/*/stderr.txt" files in the BOINC data directory and see errors and correction attempts there, if any.) But errors should never happen. If there are any, it could be temperature related, or could be an overclock at insufficient voltage — either of the CPU or, in fact often enough, of the RAM. Depending on the CPU and the PrimeGrid settings, this workload can be quite RAM read/write intensive, even though it doesn't have a large footprint in RAM.

Thank you for clarifying @StefanR5R , I tend to forget about AVX 512 since I don't have any CPU's that support it.

I do occasionally see i7-7820X's or similar for a reasonable price, but I'm not sure with the small amount of cache those have if it would even be worth it.

BTW, last time I followed the respective discussions, the LLR application (which PrimeGrid is using for many subprojects including the on in this contest) does not profit from the wider vector width of AVX-512. On those SKUs of Skylake-X/-SP and successors which have 1 vector unit per core, the AVX2 transform of LLR2 is said to work faster than the AVX-512 transform. But on SKUs with 2 vector units per core, the AVX-512 transform works faster because the AVX2 transform would leave the 2nd unit idle.

On the subject of caches: I haven't seen many solid LLR benchmarks for Skylake-X/-SP and successors – and have not seen anybody really profiling this –, but I got the impression that the non-inclusive setup of the L3 cache is helping in the LLR application, given that the per-core L2 caches have decent sizes. (But I know too little about SKL-/X/SP and about LLR to know whether this line of thought has merit. The LLR program threads definitely want ample cache sharing between cores.)

BTW, TeAm AnandTech is 2nd right now in the PrimeGrid contest, with 2 % points deficit to first. We need a boost from folks with idle or half-idle CPUs. :-)

Hope you got that thing cleaned out now! Did you take before pictures of it at least? haha
You could not see it (under a screen) but when I put the air to it, a big cloud appeared. Also, it was stable under WCG @100% load 24/7, but under prime, locked up in 10 minutes,. After cleaning, its been up for 1 1/2 hours. PROOF of exactly what you are saying about cooling.

Hopefully it'll speed up a bit now.

In Options -> Computing Preferences I had BOINC client set to use at most 50% of CPU time because I misunderstood the first post on page 17 here:

Doing that makes all cores constantly go up and down in use and I ran it like that when I went to bed. Got up this morning and changed it to 100% and all cores stayed in use.

Yeah, if you are only using one computer then you can just use the Primegrid.com's profile preferences to control what it does. That 5950x should put out some good numbers though.

@HutchinsonJC really throwing some points up there now! 5950x (and 3900x and 3950x) can really mow through these tasks pretty quickly!

Anyone else who may have joined, don't forget to post in the other thread (or this one) asking us what settings you should be using. Let us know what CPU (or CPUs if more than one) you'll be using so we can get the most out of it during the competition. These tasks can take over a day to complete on most systems and half a day on the fastest systems.

Also welcome @Fardringle and @cellarnoise who's popped up on the leaderboard recently!

@Skillz So where is the link to the teams positions ? Are we first ?

We are currently first! It's closer than it appears, though, and I wouldn't be shocked if Antarctic Crunchers regain first at some point(and then hopefully we regain it back!)

15 million is quite a bit, but I won't let up.

15 million seems like a lot, but that can change very quickly. We still have over 4 days to go on this competition. Since most computers take a couple days to complete their could be millions of points running right now that just haven't completed yet.

As for the links, there are a few you can choose from.

Yes, take a look at my work in progress tasks: (the slowest is the 7551 at 2 1/2 days, 4 tasks 16cpu each)

Based on my observation in the PG discord, Antarctic Crunchers may have woke up a big hitter sleeper in their ranks to drop a ton of points down by the name of Gelly. No idea what kind of output he is capable of though.

We must recruit more.

Well he was on discord earlier asking if he should help. All of AC was saying yes, telling him he had plenty of time left.

He never said if he was or wasn't.

"No Gelly, you should sit this one out. There will be other competitions" --Icecold, 8/17/2021 :D

Unfortunately I didn't have the PG discord up to say that.
