PrimeGrid Dog Days of Summer challenge August 26-28

Well, I hope you've all had a nice summer vacation. So did PrimeGrid, but they're back with the Dog Days of Summer Challenge! The race starts Friday, August 26 at 18:00 UTC and runs for two days. The good news is you have a fairly good chance of finding a quite large prime in this challenge. 😎 The bad news is with short, fast WUs this challenge has the potential to live up to its initials, as a DDoS challenge. 😛

What you need:
  • One or more fast x86 processors. (Even slow ones will do!)
  • Windows, Linux, or MacOS 10.4+. (Linux may be up to 10% faster, but shouldn't be if they get the new wrapper uploaded in time.)
  • BOINC, attached to PrimeGrid (http://www.primegrid.com/).
  • Your PrimeGrid Preferences with only "Proth Prime Search (LLR)" selected in the Projects section.

What won't help (but won't hurt either):
  • A 64-bit OS.
  • A large amount of RAM. Faster RAM might help, but that's doubtful too.
  • Any video cards. (I think I got LLRCuda working on 64-bit Linux, but they haven't set things up so anyone can test it yet. D🙂

What won't help (and will hurt, sort of):
  • Unstable processors. (Invalid work will be deducted! 😱 If Prime95 worked recently on your processor, it's stable.)
  • Work not downloaded and uploaded within the challenge. (It's not counted. Should you not be able to be in front of one or more computers at that time, just set their queue level very low (0.01 days). This also makes it more likely that you will be a prime finder rather than a double-checker.)

Welcome and good luck to all! 🙂

The PrimeGrid CPU client doesn't play nice with the office management system used at the office where the majority of my CPU-only systems are located. However, I just attached my home PC with an ATI HD5670 and will leave it running only PrimeGrid on the GPU as long as it behaves. Hopefully it will help a little. 🙂

Thanks! Sadly, this race is only for "Proth Prime Search (LLR)". Sieve doesn't count. 🙁

Edit: P.S. There is a sieve race in December.

Oh, I didn't notice the last part. I just saw "Proth" and associated it with the GPU project. Oh well. I'll run it anyway. 😉

I have started five hours early. I will have found all the primes ahead of time.

So, go sandbag your attics or whatever it is you do for hurricanes. Go Luck and Stay Dry!

Hopefully I'll make it in time. I downloaded the incorrect w/u last night (Cullen/Woodall Prime) *face palm*...so I'm in the rush to beat the clock before 2pm EST (1800 UTC).

If you don't beat the clock, you could abort the incorrect WUs. Of course then you wouldn't get BOINC credit for them, but you're not going to get race credit for anything downloaded before the race starts anyway.

I set my PrimeGrid to not get any new tasks (Milkyway is suspended) and it looks like it'll finish before 2pm. When 2pm rolls around, do I just click the get new tasks button in Boinc Manager?

Yes. With PrimeGrid selected, click "Allow new tasks". That's what I'm doing. 😎

I'll be joining in this race as long as the heat doesn't get unbearable. Decided to drop my cpu speed by 400mhz to help with the heat. I figure having it slower for the whole race will be better than a higher speed for part of the race

It's a little early to judge our progress, but here are stats from the first hour:
