Maybe the right thing for me to do would be to give it up already and switch from the cable provider to an ADSL provider. I would trade an uncertain chance of better availability for even lower upload band"width" at same or higher costs. But believe it or not, there are plenty of regions here in Germany with even worse Internet connectivity.

I would prefer a stable internet connection that gives up a bit of bandwidth throughput over a higher throughput, but constant down times. That's just me though.

Then again, if I had that much trouble I'd probably have both Internet connections and configure my edge router for load-balancing dual WAN connections. Though if the speed differences are vastly different then I'd probably configure it for a fail-over on the slowest connection so I am guaranteed connectivity at all or near all times.

Back when I was in high school and ADSL first started rolling out I had two 1.5Mbps download ADSL connections using a Nexland dual WAN router to load-balance them. Then I used one of the phone lines for a 56k connection that I had setup on the router as a fail-over for just in-case both ADSL connections dropped. I didn't have the option for a cable connection at the time or I probably would have opted for an ADSL and Cable connection combo instead. The upload on those ADSL connections were horrible though. I can't remember the exact throughput. I want to say it was around 128Kbps. Man those were the days. lol

You can also use something like a Pepwave Surf Soho and use either a 4G USB modem, or Wifi hotspot for failover - https://www.peplink.com/products/soho-series-surf/

You can even hotspot your phone and use that, but then it's not real time failover unless you were to have a phone dedicated to it. We've used those Pepwaves at work quite a bit and they work great - they support either a 4G USB modem or can be a wifi client for failover.

I use my phone as a failover, but its rare that my Internet goes down. I think I've used it twice in the time I've lived here. (4 years)

If you're having upload issues, they might be IPV6 related.

I have had big WU's come in since 14 hours into days one ! But it is a slow race, as the units are big unless you have very fast hardware.

One 128 MB file and another small file per result, right?

That's tiny. ;-) Just before this challenge I struggled with 1.72 GB per result, split into 123 files per result, with each CPU core delivering a result every 17h. (That was CPDN.)

I noticed that sometimes the upload speed was around a 100K to 200 Kilobytes a second and then on other task uploads sometimes over 2,000 Kbs. Maybe just how busy the server was at the time?

If it's on different computers, note that BOINC has a bandwidth limiter, which you can configure or turn off on each instance. I've found new instances get it turned on by default.

It's the fourth time now:
– right when I started participating, in 2017: 5th
– similar to 2017 when multithreading was still new and not yet picked up by many, in 2018: 3rd
– not sure who I managed this in 2021: 3rd (many top scorers had uneven showings that year)

Distracted by other contests: 2019: 37th, 2020: 53th.

Oh, all of my previous rankings are prime. :-D I should have been more careful this year (went in 6th) and let wareyore (7th) overtake me… Or I simply put the blame for my blunder on @crashtech (5th). ;-)
OTOH making it to 6th in the 6th year of participation is fitting too.
