How much would a 5950x do per day ? a lot of help ? I might be able to do one box if no config changes.

In an absolute best case scenario a 5950x is worth maybe about 175,000 PPD, but probably without any configuration changes something quite a bit less than that. Every point counts and we appreciate any crunching that happens, but if it's going to distract from you getting ready for surgery, etc. I would probably suggest sitting this one out. Up to you either way of course though :)

OK, I just paused the 3070, and updated CPU's to 100% and let her rip, at 2 x 16 cu units.

There needs to be a simple app_config or app_config addition, then ask the client to read the config, I'll post the relevant code if you want.

Here it is, just in case you want to join the party:
Code:
<app_config>
   <app_version>
       <app_name>llrGCW</app_name>
       <plan_class>mt</plan_class>
       <cmdline>-t 8</cmdline>
       <avg_ncpus>8</avg_ncpus>
   </app_version>
</app_config>
Then set boinc to use only 50% of the cores, and then command it to "Read config files."
Oh, the other thing is to set the Primegrid preferences to run only llrGCW, it looks like this in the "Edit Preferences" page on Primegrid's site:

Wht happens if I just select the GCW thing ? I don't have time for all of this config stuff.

I think it may run single threaded if you don't have a prior config set up. Not sure if single threaded tasks will finish in time, though it might be worth a go. Just set usage to 50% and see what the completion times look like in a day or so.

You can set max # of threads to 8 in your PrimeGrid preferences instead.

I have 2 running 16c and they are 24% done and about 6 hours to go. How is that ?

I always find it a little irritating to wait for the users of ultra-slow rented VMs to crawl out of the woodwork. Who knows what they are up to, might take them days to show something.
A little more than 2 days, in fact. Antarcic Crunchers started reporting real results ~12 hours ago.

Would be nice of them to be done with result reporting soon, to go back to work on their next batch.

My guess is that 10-threaded llrGCW would give slightly better throughput (for PrimeGrid, that is) than 8-threaded in the scenario which you describe.

10 threads for the llrGCW task leave fewer guesswork for the OS which of the cores to put to what use.

I am running 8-8.5 hours per task with 2 x 16 threads on my 5950x. Is that a good time ?

Looks good to me!

An E5-2696 v4 takes 9.7 hours on average (running 2 tasks at once too), but needs its 22c/44t and about 200 W power to do it.

OK Ken, you just gave me motivation to turn on a 32 core threadripper.... I have to beat you :)

It ought to be easy for you to beat me. The power company here changed their rules, so I'm even shutting down for four hours a day.

OKI, a 2990wx.... ETA 14.5 hours ! on 2 16 cu units ! It has twice the physical number of cores, and twice the memory channels and it will take 50% more time than the 5950x ! Boy what a difference a couple of generations of CPUs has.
