@ 2.8 my 2.8c will run prime95 forever, @ 3.15 it will only run for about 20mins, and @ 3.2 only seconds. i have even slowd my ram down to 333 since my board will not let me adjust ram voltage. cooling is good and cpu never goes over 60C according to mdm5 in a room that maxes out at 85F (computer room in phx, az, 3 comps always on). what is the problem?
 
If you are running small ffts, I'm fairly certain that an error on that test means that the problem is almost exclusively with the processor. You don't mention any change in processor voltage. Have you tried overvolting some for stability purposes?

my board is a i865pe based foxconn board, so it is basically oem with no voltage adj available in the bios. is it bad to have it error, or should i just stay @ 2.8?
 
If it errors in prime, its unstable and will cause your system to act up over time. I would run it a your highest primeable setting. You may can use a utility like clockgen in windows to increase the voltage.
 
thanks for the reply, is this the correct program? also, what is safe for the p4 to go? don't want to fry anything as i will probably want to get another year out of this machine then will see what available then.
 
The only thing that will fry a P4 chip is excesive voltage. Temperatures and clock speeds will be minimized automaticly in order to stay at safe levels.
 
Also, a stable overclock can be considered that which has endured Prime95 for more than 12hrs. Slightly increase voltage, to attain better stability.
 
since i can't adjust voltage i the bios and clockgen doesn't offer one for my board ( i d/l the one for intel865perl and i could slow everything down, but as soon as i tried to move it up just a hair - 1MHz, nothing, froze up). are there any other ways to adjust voltage on it through software?

or do i need to sell this extremely stable board and get something like an asus or msi? problem is i don't want to spend much $$$...
