Prime95 for Ivy Bridge?

Okay since I upgraded to an i5-3570k, I've been using Prime95 to stress test and gradually keep bumping up my CPU speed. I've read on some other forums though and saw an Asus rep on Newegg TV state that using anything other than Aida64 can potentially damage Ivy Bridge CPUs. Makes me wonder if the makers of Aida are actually behind these claims.

Being an EE myself, this all sounds like BS to me but I thought I'd ask the experts. Other than causing a severely overclocked CPU to overheat, is it actually possible for a software program to damage the CPU in some other mysterious way? Even that seems unlikely as the CPUs are supposed to throttle themselves and/or shutdown if they get hot enough. I keep a close eye on my temps using Coretemp and voltages using CPU-Z and so far I'm up to 4.2Ghz and hitting max temps of 65C with Vcore of 1.152 which doesn't seem to bad so far.

So is this myth busted? Or plausible?

Unless they went out of their way to design the program to be malicious.......they REALLY REALLY have to try hard to make sure they fluff your shux then there is no way it can hurt.
 
Temperature and voltage. I try to keep it below 85C and 1.3V for any overclocks that I set. Even if Prime95 has any negative effects towards the temps and lifespan of the CPU, thermal throttling should kick in before any permanent damage is done.
 
Wow mine is hitting 80C on Core #1 with LinX according to Core Temp. Testing mine right now at 4.2Ghz @ 1.116V under load according CPU-Z. With Prime95 it's at 66C @ 1.128V under load. Is LinX that crazy?!

Did I install my cooler wrong? It was a pain to install and I won't be surprised if I botched something..

I agree with you, Nickelplate. With the thermal control system in modern CPU's it shouldn't be possible for software to harm a microprocessor.

Do you have a link to that Asus rep video? I'd like to try to contact the reps directly.

Nothing unusual, I always get higher temps with LinX/IBT.
 
You cant damage your CPU by using a load as such. You only damage it by overclocking and overvolting. Assuming you didnt disable thermal monitors in BIOS.

And anything below 105C is fine on IB.

Its only GPUs (Besides Tesla cards) that cant run true 100% heavy loads.

Shintai: I haven't disabled thermal monitoring or anything. I'm just leaving everything in BIOS on auto except the multiplier of course and disabled internal gpu and going to see how high I can go before I have to start dinking with Vcore or other settings. But of course keeping any eye on where the MB auto Vcore voltage is.

Oh @geokilla: I went back and looked at my screenshots and a slight correction I actually hit 67C at 4.2Ghz, not 65C so I was a couple degrees off. That's with a 25C internal case temperature. I have pretty good case cooling, usually 1°F to 3°F above room ambient.

That FUD sounds suspiciously like the bogus claims that only AIDA could read the proper IB temps! (which are read exactly the same as the previous proc's temps...)

At least I think that was the claim made.

Yep, that was the claim. No small wonder either, AIDA is made by a "for profit" business. I also hear delidding your IB provides no improvements 😉 :whiste:
