Primary ide out one MB

Any drives attached to the Primary IDE slot on the MB are not recognized at boot time.

At first, the HDs were on the primary, and the DVD drives were recognized.
Then after switching the controller cables, the HDs work, but not the DVDs.

I have managed to get the primary to work once with the DVD drives attached.

The MB is a P4P800 SE. It works fine except for not the IDE problem.

Are both ide channels enabled in the bios? Do the drives show up in the bios? Double checked the jumper settings?

The ribbon cable to the DVD was torn.
