Pricing errors at the grocery store, how often for you?

I shop mostly at Giant Foods as they are the closet to my house. But I get about 30% of the time something goes wrong and I have to get the staff involved. I have never had this many problems with pricing until I started shopping here.

Yesterday something was not right and when I went to check the sign out it was over 2 weeks old yet still up.
Then other times the people would say maybe I did not get the right item. So I had to get the AD and show them. Then have to show them how to do the math, yes simple elementary school type math, to fix it.

I wrote their Corp yesterday to suggest a fix that worked for an older grocery store where I grew up. If something scans higher then the AD or store tag then the first item is free and the others are changed to the lower price (AD or Store Tag). That way they store is told and they have a good reason to fix it ASAP. Not to let it sit incorrect for over 2 weeks or more.

So does this happen a lot to you?

For many years, after the scanners first came out, most stores had the "If we scan the item and the price is wrong, you get the item free" policy.

I haven't seen that in many years though.

Lots of places seem to count on shoppers not paying enough attention at the check-out so they can get away with pricing things differently at the shelves and in the computer.

That's the law around here. If it scans higher than marked or on POS signs you get 1 for free, all others for the lower price.

Giant has pretty much sucked since the death of Izzy Cohen when it was sold to Ahold.

I used to watch every scanned item like a hawk. I'd say there was an error on every 4th trip. I used to complain, but nothing would happen other than they'd sometimes offer a $5 gift certificate. I've yet to use one of them since they were usually simple mistakes. Most of the time the price is off by a few pennies in their favor and then the cashier will scan something expensive (like a red fresno pepper) and call it something cheap (like a jalapeno pepper) in my favor. It is all a wash, so I stopped caring.

it happens often enough. and damn near 100% of the time the price errors are in the store's favor..odd huh?

I went to target and seen some build a bear's on sale for $4.99 i grabbed 3 of them. when i got up to the cashier they rang up as $19.99. is aid no they are $5. she called back and said no the sign says 20. i walk back and sure enough the sign was changed.

next time i went in they had some stuffed dogs marked $5 when they are usually $12. i got 3 (1 for crhistmas party at my kids school 1 for my daughter and 1 for the toys for tots) but th is time i took a picture of it!

but the cashier didn't care and she just changed it heh.

so now whenever i see something on sale i just take a picture with my phone.

seems more stores are trying to pull shit more often.

I shop at stores which don't do the club pricing so there are fewer price changes and thus fewer errors. The errors I have caught more often are checker errors, like double-checking an item.

I pay almost no attention at the grocery store. Maybe I should start, idk

Not me. Part penny pincher and the rest not trusting for this very reason.

When I check out I know within 5% what my total will be. I also know at least the range the price should be for each item. So if something is in my $2 range and it scans $2.99, like the item yesterday, I know to look at it.

Giant Foods?

Which is it? Is it a store for Giants? "You must be this tall to enter" Or Is it a store with only Giant foods? Like "Worlds biggest carrot" and "Worlds biggest steak" ?

In any case, I'd think the two would go together.. I mean, giants generally need to eat larger portions, so it would make sense for a store for giants to have giant portions!

Definitely. I catch pricing errors on sale items at my grocery store all the time.

Actually, a lot of stores in general seem to not have their registers' pricing database in sync with sales. Maybe I'm more mindful of it now (or maybe they're hoping people won't catch the mistakes), but I feel like I'm catching pricing errors all the time, everywhere. Which sucks 'cause then they have to do a price check and I have to hold everyone else up.

All the time. Yesterday I got a pack of Ghirardelli chocolate chips free (I was buying 10 for baking) since they rang up $0.79 more expensive than marked. If I wasn't paying attention I would have overpaid by over $8.

Giant Food does have a price scan guarantee. Your store isn't following it.

Yes. Our Company is committed to 100% price accuracy.

Our Company guarantees that all items will scan accurately. If any item scans higher than the price marked, advertised, unit price tagged or signed, you are entitled to one unit of the item FREE. Any additional items of the same product in the order will be honored at the lower price.

I just hate going through the TSA checkpoints to buy vinegar, then reading the secure vinegar buyers contract, all the addendum's, only to get into the secure airtight vinegar register, get questioned again, then to top it off it scans the wrong price.

Most chains still have it (or some modification of it), they just don't advertise it and won't do anything unless you specifically point it out.

What stores do you go to that don't?

I guess I need to start paying attention. I usually just grab what I need and leave and as long as the price isn't some huge difference, it doesn't matter...

Ha I did not find that yesterday. Will print it now and use it to my advantage. :awe:

Of course I have never been offered the item for free.

The asian woman at the Giant near me already hates me as I seem to find all their errors. I don't think me asking for free items is gonna help that now. :)

The only time I've had a grievous error in check out was in my college town. I purchased some honeycrisp apples and the lady checking me out literally leaned on the produce scale with her elbow. It came out at around $35 worth of apples. I wasn't sure if it was an honest mistake or if it was like the walmart people double scanning items, so I had a manager fix it.

They rarely happen for me. The only one I can remember happening recently was a cashier error - I had a bag with a red and a yellow bell pepper in them, as red and yellow peppers were on sale for the same amount. The cashier rung them up as orange peppers, which were more expensive. But I just told him to re-ring them as a red or a yellow since they're the same price, and it wasn't a problem.

I always make sure not to put different produce items in the same bag unless they're the same price, but I guess a lot of people don't bother to check so the cashiers just do whatever they feel like.

EDIT: Oh yeah there was one other thing I remember. My wife bought some ribbons that were on sale over the Thanksgiving weekend at Michael's. She went back a week or so later to exchange one but they wouldn't do a straight exchange, they only gave her back the sale price of one ribbon and made her pay the difference (since the sale had ended). The people at the store didn't have any access to the past week's sale prices and the receipt only listed the discounted price, not the full price with the discount applied. It was only a couple bucks but it was pretty annoying.

What made it worse is she used a coupon she got to reduce the difference and they acted like they were doing her a huge favor since the coupon didn't take effect until the next day.

So which Giant is this, Springfield Plaza, Cardinal Forest, Saratoga, or Kings Park?
