Pricing: Core 2 Duo vs Sandy Bridge

Something I found puzzling:

I recently sold my 5 year old system on here and eBay:
e8400 core2duo + Asus p5q-pro mobo + 4gb ddr2 = 190 shipped
4gb ddr2 = 45 shipped
total = 235-20 = 215 net after shipping costs

bought:
i5-2500k + gigabyte z68 mobo = 201 after tax (microcenter deal)
8gb ddr3 = 35 shipped
total = 236

Why do people still pay this much for older c2d systems when they could have just bought this new sandybridge system? I'm not complaining, just thought it was strange. I basically upgraded my 5 year old system to something much better for just $20 more.

I know what you are saying but keep in mind not everyone can get to or is even aware of microcentre deals.

Also DDR2 is expensive as it is rarely used anymore so that put your total up a little more.

Gz on the new build btw :D

Even if you couldn't get the MC deal and DDR2 was less expensive to buy you would still be looking at a maximum difference of around $80 which still seems way out considering the performance difference between a 2500k and an E8400

I can absolutely assure u most ppl outside American cities can't get a 2500k & Z68 mobo for $236! Where i live, with tax, its ~$270 just for the 2500k!!!!(live in Toronto Canada)

I am thinking you could buy it in the USA and send it to Canada in a box that says tractor parts. Montana has no sales tax. That might be a long drive. Maybe what the USA needs is a tax free duty free shop in the northern great lakes area. I guess someone has to pay for that healthcare.

i dont get that either, esp with laptops. why would anyone get a used laptop when you could get a much better new one for $350-400. people on craigslist still price their stuff as if they dont realize this.

i also dont get why anyone would buy a brazos notebook. some of the them are priced at 400-500. why would anyone buy laptops that perform that badly for that price when there are pentium and i3 laptops that vastly outperform them for $350

At work we've paid too much for a couple of used laptops just to get the parts to repair ones in use. It was worth it to have the laptop usable again while migrating to a new one.

For CPUs, if you have a working system with a slow core 2, just replacing the CPU can make sense over the effort of moving to a new PC. Same with RAM.

In my case though, the guy not only bought my cpu or ram, but essentially the entire system (cpu, mobo, ram).

I understand that not everyone has a Micro Center near them, but they can still find very good deals at Fry's or look for deals online.

nope its not even the tax, the CPU costs $240 (it's ~$35 tax on a $240 + $10 shipping). Check it out:

for some reason hardware is ALWAYS cheaper in the USA, even compared to poorer countries like Thailand or Taiwan, its always just cheaper in the USA. Guess its all that competition!

In India, 2500k is $270. Z68 ud3 is $250 or so. So what cost you $200 costs $520 or so here

Core 2 duo plus motherboard plus ram can be had for about $100-120 total

Maybe look for a Father's day sale.

I looked at going to a Microcenter but I determined I would not save much with gas at $4.15 a gallon. I even figured out the taxes ahead of time and I would only save a little over $10 after taxes on a 2500k. I think my savings would have just gone toward GAS.

I think if you time your purchases right when you can get a lot on sale with free shipping, sometimes just picking the right time to buy your parts can save you an extra $30 or $40. For instance they they start selling the new i-5 processors the 2500k may drop in price quite a bit. Maybe the Z68 motherboards will drop a bit too.

There is probably some poor guy wishing they could get gasoline for $4.00 a gallon. I imagine in some places with high taxes they are paying $10.00 for a gallon of gas. I think I remember Gas being quite expensive when I drove from Alaska to Canada to St Louis, Missouri. That was like 20 years ago. However, I think it was worth it to drive the Alkan highway at least once in my life.

I was just on the Walmart website and I looked at computers from the lowest price to the highest. The low prices started at around $97, but that was for a refurbished P4 with 512 megs of ram. I chuckled and realized that is what I am using at work.
