i bought an Asus X850XT a year ago. it's in a system with an 11.1% overclock.

i alway wondered if the slightly older, more mature products are better for overclocking, especially if you don't play games.

i'm slowly learning 3D studio Max, which involves having it render lots of mini-animations.

from working on and around electronics assembly lines for about 20 years, i've come to the conclusion that it's better to wait a year or 6 months after a product is introduced, to allow the design engineers & the manufacturing engineers to get everything running smoothly.

i've been wanting the Asus 6800 GT since it was $400+.

it's wierd to see it selling for more than the X850XT, which sapphire now has for $169.

i can't help but wonder if the Asus 6800 GT is a better OC'er than the X850XT.

It usually went to ultra speeds but not much more. The X850 is a much faster card, plus, you already own it. If you want to buy something at around that price,. you might like the 7600GT, it can OC to about 650 with a simple volt mod.

Well, you can rice out a Civic all day long, but it still won't keep up with a Vette. Not to say that the performance difference between these cards is that drastic.

Asus video cards command an enormous price premium over their peers. The quality difference is debateable. An older card like the 6800GT is likely left over old stock, from times where its MSRP properly positioned it vs. other high end cards. The $160-ish 850XTs have been selling very briskly, so many etailers don't have as much $ invested in them.

Overclocked, an X850XT will be faster than even an ultra-level overclock on a 6800GT, no matter who made the 6800. But it won't have SM 3.0, so won't be able to do HDR in games outside of HL2.

My 6800GT does 440/1180 after I put a NV Silencer5 on it, but I bet it'll still get its ass kicked by a moderately overclocked X850XT.
