prices on 5850s seem to be climbing

Newegg has been bending people over a barrel on new hot items. Like the Intel X25-M G2 SSD drives. They were selling for as much as $499 when the MSRP is $229. They will come down eventually but if you want something that just came out then Newegg is the last place to go these days. Look elsewhere.

Econ 101, supply and demand...

I got a Xfx 5850 from Tiger Direct for 264, a few dollars over MSRP, but still cheaper than newegg and zipzoomfly. Had to play 2 dollars for shipping (oh no). Their stock says, ships in 3 to 5 business days, so I will be waiting for a good chunk of time.

Newegg does charge a lot and on big orders i try to order out of state so I don't have to pay California sales tax.

Well, what do you expect? You can get 5870 performance for $120 less. If the demand is so great and they cannot keep them in stock, why not raise the price. People are getting 900/1200 timings out of their OC. Those numbers are from memory and they could be slightly higher or lower. However, what I have noticed in other forums is the 5850 OC's better than the 5870.

There is no MSRP for Intel's drives. They cost the reseller $229 in quantities of 1000, which in turn means Newegg is probably paying somewhere around $200-$210 per drive.

I've had my 5850 for a couple of days, and was able to clock it to 850/1200 on the first try. No artifacts after 30 min ATI Tool test. Had to go on the road for work so I left it there for now.

It's the 8800GT of today.

well if only people just stop buying these ... prices will fall ... but they will not and I can see demands spike higher as we move toward xmas.

That's just newegg effect. Not a world wide phenomenon. I hate newegg for doing this kind of stuff.

huh? you hate them because they (gasp) raise the price when stock runs short? Those Bastards!! You're right, they should just charge 259 and run out of stock for weeks at a time instead of charging 279 and...run out of stock for weeks at a time anyway. honestly, we're lucky that they didn't jack it up to 299 or 329.

I always laugh when I see people claim "price gouging". It is all supply and demand. They sure would not be complaining if they were the seller and could decide the going rate.

I was surprised that the 5870 sold at MSRP at the egg when it came out since it was in short supply. They are making up for it now. hehe

At this point honestly any place that sells 5850s and isn't jacking the prices up is stupid. We are supply limited, they are all selling out anyway, might as well make a couple bucks in the process.

You guys must be commies? You live in the US, well most of you anyways, it's a free economy with supply and demand that dictate prices. Get over it 😛
