Prices of old cards

So I've been thinking about upgrading my old Video card. Looking at an X800XL agp. Just wondering why the price of an old 9800 Pro/XT is pretty much the same as the X800's,... hell even the 9600XT is still over $200,... what gives ??? Why are the prices of the old tech not dropping? From what I can see the X800XL whups up on the 9800XT, so why are they still priced so close?

It's because ATI is still selling the Radeon 9600XT and 9800XT are still selling like very well. Also, because the 2 above-mentioned cards are very fast using PS 2.0 and VS 2.0 even compared to the GeForce 6800. Don't worry. In about a year or 2 they'll be selling for $50 tops!🙂

The 9800xt is not cheap because it has 256mb memory, and that drives it's price way up. I don't know if the 9600xt has 256mb, but either way, it's a bad deal, it's a midrage card and should not have 256mb memory. But I agree that if you can get a x800xl for $300, then $250 for the 9800xt is a complete ripoff, especially given the fact that a <$200 6600gt is faster in many cases.

The card prices are holding because supply for the next gen x800/6800 series was soo tight plus the prices were $300-400 so the older gen cards could still sell for $150-200 range. Its only gone down 50 bucks after 10 months or so which really sucks for people who were waiting. I remembered the top of the line Ti500 was only $260 for its time.

New cards ain't just made 'cause they can be faster, but 'cause they can be made cheaper. The 9800XT was an uber high-end expensive to make card.

Oh, just around town,.... the 9600XT are about $203- $249 usually with a $50 rebate and the 9800 Pro is also $249 with a $50 rebate. Just seems odd, the same shops have the x700 pro AGP for $199 the x800 XL for $349, 6600GT for $249, and 6800GT for $399,....... just does not seem to be a "good value" card out there. Like when I picked up a Ti4600 for $129,......

Alot of the midrange cards (9800/9600) being sold for so much are old stock cards that the store purchased for high prices a while back. So they feel they have to sell them for a profit regardless. Believe it or not, alot of the people who price things in stores know nothing about what cards are better. They just look at what they paid and mark it up. Look at all the 5950 ultras out there for $400-$500.

Oh, retail...

get a 6600gt or a 6800gt over an x800xl

why? shader model 3.0 support, which will be needed for next gen games (coming out this year), and the x800 doesnt have it.
also, they are really good overclockers, and perform well within what you need.
