Prices in FS/FT are generally outrageous!

I priced something for a quick sale. Everyone thought it must be defective. Price seemed suspicious too them. I removed the item and then listed it again for a higher price and it sold fast.
 
Used to be that we mailed our old parts to others on the forum in exchange for food and sex. Now they want money??

This is a common sales technique. People can't be expected to do research on every product they buy so they just go with the "Well if it costs this much it must be good"

People selling Apple stuff are the absolute worst. 4 year old hardware at half of the original MSRP or 1 year old stuff at almost MSRP. Who the hell is buying this crap?
 
I find it to be the opposite. You have to price your stuff at 40%+ off for anybody to even message you.

My last thread in the FS/T forum I did my research and priced all of my stuff to be the same as I would get on ebay after all the ebay fees. I figured the buyer gets a little discount compared to ebay prices and some security knowing they receive working goods, and I as a seller don't have to support ebay and their obscene 10% listing fees, so I thought it would be a quick sale. But no, I only managed to sell two laptop sticks of RAM. And even in that case the buyer tried to haggle so I had to point out to him that the price is already lower than ebay.

After no PMs for a week or two I just listed all of my gear on ebay and sold it in about a week. I do have to relist one hard drive, but that's still better than no one buying my stuff. So that's my experience...
 
People charge what they think they can get but some are totally delusional.

If the thread has to be bumped 100 times, it should occur that no one is interested/willing to pay that price. This common logic does not ever occur to a lot of people.
 
Heh... I wonder what my 3 year old Dell XPS 15 with a scratched screen would get.

It cost me $1,300 back then, so, what... $800, right? 🙂
 
I usually start at half of the item's current new price. If I bought the item for new for $200 and it's currently selling new for $150 I will list it at $75.

There is no reason used shit should be worth more than half the current new cost. I don't care if you only used it once, you have no way to prove it.

If the item is no longer available new, then you have to check what other people are selling it for used and compare accordingly.
 
You're really only seeing the stuff that hasn't sold when you look on FS/FT so of course the prices are going to seem high. IF something is sold its taken down, what remains is everything thats overpriced.

I posted my macbook air on here for $600. Bought it for $1300 about 4 years ago.

Ended up selling it on craigslist for 525. Thought I got a fair price for it.

I never understood that. I hardly ever sell anything, but when I do it's a bargain because I don't want to waste time haggling with anyone or holding on to the item just in case I can get a few dollars more for it.

I think some people enjoy the haggling part of the transaction though. That was never me. Whatever price I set will be so cheap that no haggling should be necessary, so don't even try. That's how I run my store too. We're cheaper than everyone else and I know it, so don't expect the price to drop any more no matter how much you buy.
 
They have to be with all the lowball offers that come in. I have a phone that I can sell on ebay for $130 easily. Post it in the forums for $100 shipped just to not have to deal with ebay. Get $60 offers all day long.

Recently sold a TiVo on ebay for $317.50. after fees ~$280. My best forum offer was $200 shipped.

I'm not looking to make a bunch of money, but not having to deal with eBay is not worth 40% of the used value. To me anyway.

These days, ebay is so buyer friendly that it's practically as safe as buying retail. That supports a higher price than you can get on the forums, which don't have quasi-automatic refund-the-buyer policies.

I bought a generator on ebay once that I was 90% sure was a scam due to its low price, because I knew that I could get my money back if my intuition was correct. I wouldn't have even sent a PM if I'd seen the same thing on the forums.

All it takes is one clueless user on a tech forum to buy their crap.
 
I sell laptops when I get a few from trades and side work throughout the year, sold 5 of them the same day I listed them last week...guess my prices are too good😀
 
Are there really this many people on a forum that is comprised of people with an above-average IQ, who don't know how cost/value/price work? (not picking on the responses in this thread, but a general trend in OPs I have seen recently.)

If people are selling their items for the listed prices, then they are either priced right or too low, depending on how long it took to sell.

This is about what I would do. If you want people to take a risk on buying something that is likely out of warranty and comes with no guarantee at all of working, you better list it at a deep discount. I don't think it necessarily has to be half price, but certainly not less than 40% off the cheapest current new price you can find from a reputable dealer.
